SOURCE: 1988 Jaguar Vanden replace headlight

What you need to do is remove the 2 screws on the top bezel from inside the engine bay, then underneath the outer corner of the plastic headlamp surround there is a philips screw, (put your head under neath car near from wheel) loosen the screw, do not remove it, now the headlamp plastic bezel/surround will come free enough so you can get a philips screwdriver in through the middle of the headlamp surround, there is a chrome retaining ring holding the headlamp in place, loosen the 3 philips screws (do not remove) The retaining ring will rotate and you can slide the ring out from the outer edge of the headlamp surround. The headlamp will then come out throught the middle of the surround, disconnect the 3 pin multiplug and reverse process for install.

SOURCE: 1989 jaguar xjs v12 fuel mixture

Chances are the coolant temperature sensor or its wiring have failed, or the vacuum line to the MAP sensor is leaky or broken (I believe the V12 in '89 guise uses MAP sensors). The MAP sensor measures Manifold Absolute Pressure. Along with this pressure the ECU looks at engine RPM. It also measures air temperature. Knowing pressure and temperature we know density, and knowing engine speed tells us how much volume of air is going through the engine. All of this together is computed into air mass and is used to calculate how much fuel mass should be admitted. If the vacuum line is broken, the ECU reads less vacuum and produces rich mixture thinking that the engine is under high load.

You may not have all the things I list. these are things that will make an engine run rich. ECM, 02 sensors, map sensor, mass air flow sensor, vacuum leaks, throttle position sensor, Clogged air filter, Clogged catalitic converter. You have already replaced the injectors and the ECT , so that rules them out. Check for codes. Start with vacuum leaks. Hoses and the intake manifold gaskets. If you need more info let me know. Jaguar xjs fuel tank has a filling problem, I can't put more than 3 gallons and then the air pressure stops the filling.

There is a vent tube that runs beside the fuel filler hose to the tank,or in the filler tank that is restricted with something ,or kinked .

1989 XJS V12 furl problem

Obviously, fuel and oil should never be in the same spot at the same time. You have a dead cylinder and maybe a stuck-open injector. The black smoke is from a too-rich fuel mix, so the cheap things to look for are in the fuel injection system. Look at the fuel pressure regulator as well. Good luck, and don't forget to relieve the fuel pressure before you do any work on fuel inj. engines!
