The serpentine belt is fine. The Water Pump Drive Belt is all frayed and about ready to break. I can't figure out how to get the belt off the pulleys. The belt is 18" around.

A bunch of idiots - the guy is right there are 2 belts - one serpentine and one just for the water pump - you will need to remove the water pump and belt at the same time - if the belt is frayed then you can bet the water pump is close to shot too

There is no water pump drive belt...there's a "Serpentine" belt that powers ALL the accessories and cooling...If you've never done this before, take it to a mechanic (NOT THE DEALER) and have it done ($75)
Good Luck

Replace water pump v6

1. Drain the coolant.
2. Loosen, (don't remove yet) the 4 bolts that hold the water pump pulley.
3. Remove the drivebelt. In order to remove the belt you need to put a wrench on the tensioner pulley to decrease the tension on the belt.
4. Now remove the 4 bolts loosened in step 2.
5. Disconnect the upper radiator hose from the water pump and disconnect the bypass hose from the top of the water pump.
6. Remove the drivebelt tensioner by removing the bolt in the center of it.
7. Remove the water pump bolts. There are 6mm and 8mm bolts, a total of 12 bolts. They are not all the same length. Be careful to note which bolts go in which holes.
8. After all bolts are removed sometimes the pump will require a little whack with a rubber mallet to unseat the gasket. Never pry between the pump and engine block.
9. Before installing the new pump, clean all the old gasket material from the engine block.
10. Use RTV sealant on both sides of the gasket for the new pump.
And............ the rest is just reversing the above except that you can fully tighten the pump pulley before putting the belt back on.
I hope this is helpful.

I was told by the repair shop that my water pump belt needs to be replaced. I bought the belt, read my haynes manual, which said to turn the tensioner clockwise. The problem is I see a way to do this. I...

3.0 Escapes DO NOT use a tensioner for the water pump belt. If you get a clear look at your water pump, you'll see the pump itself is bolted to a pump housing. The pump housing is bolt to the block using three bolts which differ from the actual water pump bolts. Remove the three bolts from the pump housing to relieve tension on the belt. The cooling system will remain sealed. Change the belt and reinstall the bolts. (The three bolts use washers)
