go google and type in -- torque specifications for opel engine 1.6 L 1989-- and there will pages with the specs

On the 1/4-inch bolts..........72 to 108 in-lbs.
On the 5/16-inch bolts........108 to 132 in-lbs.
Remember to start in the center and work your way out in a circular pattern.

danger big time, get that fixed now.
or DIY,
defeat air bags (FSM steps ) (if you have em.)
remover cover from center of steering, (air bag, rules)
and tighten that big nut there to factory spec. torque.

Normaly supplied with the head gasket with the sequence in which to tighten them.

I don't know. Why doesn't Dana know these things before he takes his truck apart?

The torque converter to flex plate torque spec's are as
follow's.(listed by transmission)
A4LD
20-34 ft lbs (27-46 N.m)
AOD/C-6/E40D
20-30 ft lbs (27-41 N.m)

Tighten the head bolts 29 to 32 ft lbs , then tighten again to 59 to 64 ft lbs

Your truck has a A4LD transmission. The older ones had major problems. What i believe is happening with yours is the converter is locking up intermittently. 1st-4th are actual gears for 5th(overdrive) the converter locks. I had the same problem as well as did alot of people I spoke with. I solved it by getting a used A4LD out of a '92 ranger with a 3.0L motor (these transmissions had some upgrades to deal with a number of problems including the one you are talking about.) You will need to swap bell-housings (this requires the pump to be shimmed properly,I paid a shop $100 to install the pump ,with is attached to the back of the bell-housing) There are only 2 kinds of A4LD one for floor shift and 1 for column shift,make sure you get the right one.Good luck.
