Question about 1996 Chevrolet Cavalier

1 Answer

2001 Cavalier won't start even with a new starter. no Turnover

My cavalier will not start. It is a 2001 2.2. When the key is put into the ignition, there it recognizes that the key is in when the door is open, so I know there is power. The battery is not the problem. The dash won't light up when the ignition is turned. I was told to check the "starter box". I have no idea what this looks like, and obviously no idea where it is located.

I need some help. Also, if someone could tell me where I could get a complete wiring diagram for my car, I would appreciate it a whole lot!

Thank you.

Haynes automotive manuals have good diagrams.. Check too make sure the ground on the battery has a really good and clean connection, at the battery post. If that is clean and tight then follow the neg (black) cable to where it mounts on the engine or frame, make sure it is clean and tight. Check all your connections on the starter motor, Which should be on the bell housing between the engine and transmission. You will see a smaller motor on top of the starter with a big cable and a couple of smaller wires, make sure everything is tight and secure. if you have to remove wires from starter to repair wires undo the cables from your battery. you dont wanna short these out. easier to undo batt than find a blown fusible link in the ignition circuit. if thats not your problem than it should be in the ignition where your key goes into. Good luck with that.

What would cause a 2001 chevy cavalier has to be started touching wires on the starter?

There are 2 wires to thr Starter. A thick cable which comes directly from the attery and a thin cable which comes from the ignition switch. it would appear from your description that one of these is either loose, dirty or has a bad solder joint. Establish which wire you are touching that makes it work, then you might have to replace the terminal on the end.

If the switch is damaged, a fire could occur in the steering column, even with the engine off and the key removed. The fire could spread to the interior of the car, which could injure occupants of the car or cause damage to adjoining structures.

Car wont turn over

Sounds like you have a bad starter. To check this you can try taking a hammer to the starter and tap it while someone in the car turns the key. If it starts you know you have a bad starter and need to replace it. Hope this helps you out
