First, double check that the gas cap is good and tight. Sounds silly, but sometimes a loose gas cap will cause the check engine light to come on. Failing that, take the car to someone who can read the codes. You might have a bad or lazy O2 sensor but the codes are the quickest way to tell.

SOURCE: Check engine light is on

If the light was flashing when it came on, then it means your engine is misfiring.

A solid light can mean anything from a loose/faulty gas cap to a transmission issue.

This light comes on when the computer detects a fault of some sort in its diagnostic tests. If it keeps detecting this issue, the light will remain on. If the light turns off, then it has detected that the issue may no longer be present.

In order to find out what the exact reason was for your light, You need to have your car computer scanned to retrieve the code that the computer would have stored when the light triggered. Most garages will do this free of charge. The code will tell you what may have caused the light to initially turn on. Until you get this code, it's impossible to determine what parts need to be checked or replaced.

Unfortunately, with some cars, there will be problems that the computer keeps picking up and throwing the light.

How does a fan blow apart while in park?

Fans are notorious for work-hardening. I have lost 2 of them, both making holes in the bonnet when they exploded. Replacing the fan assembly is no big deal but do get the viscous coupling checked and/or replaced at the same time.

Depending on where you are located, a good second hand unit should be available from a Land Rover shop - forget the dealers.

Do NOT drive the vehicle until this is fixed - or you likely damage the engine by overheating

call the garage and ask if a flatbed was used or boom style..why was the car towed in the first place??if it was done by cops.. the tow company will not fix it BUT you can get a decent garage to fix it and send the bill to the towyard that screwed it up..I hate when a towyard.. especially one that excusively tows for law enforcement..screws up cars .. we had a 4wd subaru that was towed without a flatbed..it mbroke the transfer case and subsequently destroyed the car..we fought the tow company for 3 years but finally won..it costs nearly 3000 bucks for a 500 dollar car to proove a point..

A red light on the dashboard can mean you should stop driving right away, or you may have a little time before you have to bring your car into the shop. Know what's what so you don't get stuck.
  1. Critical Warning Lights
    • 1 Brake Light. Make sure you are not driving with hand brake on. Check brake-fluid level. Top off brake fluid if low and make appointment to check brakes. Driving with brake light can be dangerous; deal with this soon. Call tow truck or drive carefully and slowly to shop.
    • 2 ABS (antilock brake system) Light. Indicates either low brake-fluid level, stuck brake caliper or faulty ABS. Check brake fluid and make appointment to get brakes checked. Call tow truck or drive carefully and slowly to shop.
    • 3 Oil Light. Either engine is very low on oil or there is no oil pressure. Pull over and turn off engine immediately. Check oil level and add oil if low. Turn engine back on to see if light has gone off. If oil light is still on, bad oil pump (no oil pressure) is likely. Call tow truck.
    Maintenance Lights
    • 1 Check Engine Light. Car's computer senses engine problem. Difference in performance may not be noticeable, but make appointment to have car diagnosed. This usually cost around $65-$75 to do. OK to drive. If problem is serious, computer may switch to limp-home (low-power) mode and you won't have option of waiting to bring car into shop.
    • 2 Air Bag Light. Get air bags checked. Problem could prevent them from activating in accident. OK to drive, but not safe in accident.
    • 3 Battery Charge Light. Alternator is not charging. OK to drive, but turn off any unneeded electrical devices (radio, heater, defroster) and avoid starting engine more than necessary. Bring car into shop soon to avoid getting stranded. When alternator is not charging, battery loses charge and car stops working.
    • 4 Emissions Lights (O2 sensor, EGR, check emissions). Depending on car model, these lights may indicate problem with emissions sensor or may light up at certain mileage, usually 60,000 miles (100,000 km). Get sensors checked. OK to drive. If problem exists, car might get poor gas mileage.

Cold engine light on, oil light flashing, bubbles of air on the engine oil stick?

Do not start the car. Tow it to a service centre and have it checked out as this sounds like amajor engine fault that may escalate if driven. If the car has an automatic transmission the drive wheels will need to be lifted or the car put on a truck to stop damage to the transmission when towing.

2003 RAV4 Engine Replaced, Electrical Issues

first it is plausible that it could be a ecm problem however if it were replacing the engine was a waste of money and the problem never got solved, and i highly doubt it's a ecm problem to begin with. with the ecm it does learn as you are driving but the only way it does that is by checking the sensors and compenstating the performance from the results. if you were leaking fluid and it was red it was from your transmission or your transaxle if it's 4 wheel drive. If your yellow light comes on most people assume that it has something to do with the computer, but often times that in newer vehicles they don't always have seperate gauges for the oil, electrical, etc. and if you have a low level in fluids it will cause the check engine light to come on. I have over 25 years of experience in engine building i have replaced alot of engines in different vehicles over the years and i have yet to install one in a RAV4, however basic engine principles still apply. all engines run the same and transmissions are the same. the trick is to use common sense and take your time in diagnosing problems. Now you stated you felt a loss of power brfore you had to tow it. I'm going to ask you a few basic questions and I would like you to reply back with the answers. this will help me pinpoint the problem instead of guessing like most under qualified mechanics that just want your money

Gear fluid

Most automatic transmissions do not have a filler plug or cap. The transmission fluid is added by using a long-neck funnel, which is placed in the tube the dipstick for the transmission sits in. Be sure to test the level while the engine is running, with the transmission in either park or neutral. Be very careful not to over fill the transmission, and make sure that you have the right kind of transmission fluid for your vehicle.
