GASCAP and engine light

My 2007 dodge nitro seems to be holding a lot of pressure in the fuel tank. When I try to fill it up, the shut off on the fuel pump clicks off the fuel after a few seconds and then there is spit back of fuel. The engine light is on with the "GAS CAP" light. What could cause this?

hey if you're doing the filling up properly, and it's still a problem, THEN go to the idea that the gascap is faulty, don't just "replace" stuff after a few assumption.

  • Daryl Gleaton May 16, 2014

Yes the gascap light should throw a code if you fuel with the engine running. Not so much to tell you the cap is off. It is part of the emissions evaporative system control. The tank has to have pressure or the light comes on. Also if the light is on and points to the cap then make sure that ther aren't any cracks in gasket or filler neck.

Hey Tom if he is having a problem filling the tank, then what is the proper way to fill a gas tank? IIf the check valve is sticking.

A bad gas cap will cause the light to come on, of so replace the cap. The vent is not working if gas is coming back at you. Replace with new.

1 question, if the gascap is removed for the sake of filling up, would the light go on? I'm no Dodge expert but isn't it suppose to come on as a warning, so that people remember to close it?

Well you don't do it properly. Is the nozzle in ALL THE WAY? What do you do when you're with a woman you go all the way or "just the tip"? The gas cap light is on because you're filling gas aren't you? Is it Diesel or Petrol? Just Curious it doesn't matter to how you fill it up! There's usually a flap after the cap to stop fuel from spilling out when driving, if your nozzle don't get pass this flap you'll spill out. ALL THE WAY. No fuel tank on a LATE model car would be designed to have the pressure building up.

You stated "key in and key out", I'm assuming that your car has a locking gas cap. If that's the case, turn the key to the right (clockwise), once the key stops, hold it in the far right position with your right hand, then grab the gas cap with your left hand and turn it clockwise. That should do it. Hope this helps. If I was able to FixYa, please rate my answer. Thanks.

Why is my gascap light on?

The "gascap" warning tells you that there is a leak somewhere in the fuel tank, fill neck, or gas cap that is preventing vacuum from developing in the tank. If you are certain that your gas cap is good, the second most likely culprit is the fuel fill neck gasket was compromised during the accident, or that there was unnoticed damage to the gas tank which is not allowing a vacuum to develop inside the tank.

I came across this service bulletin that you will find helpful- I do believe the VCF is above the fuel tank; but if you call any diy auto parts store like NAPA, AutoZone, Pep Boys, etc.or even the parts department at Dodge, for pricing, they'll tell you exactly where it is located and they may even print out the schematic for you. Best wishes on your project. BTW, did you're "check engine" light go on? Did you get an OBD-II fault reading? Or fail an emissions test? Just curious for my own knowledge.

Customer may report that the vehicle is hard to fill with fuel or that the fuel pump nozzle
shuts off repeatedly while trying to fill vehicle.
This customer complaint can occur due to a number of different causes. The fuel tank is
the least likely cause of this condition. The following Diagnostic procedure can be used to
diagnose the issues.

1. Is the vehicle a LX/LE/LC/L2?
a. Yes >> proceed to Step #2
b. No >> proceed to Step #4
2. Idle the vehicle 60 to 90 seconds upon stopping.
3. Does tank refill properly?
a. No >> proceed to Step #4
b. Yes >> Inform the customer to idle the vehicle for 60 to 90 seconds upon stopping if
vehicle was driven aggressively. This is due to the fact that on the LX/LE/LC/L2 the
fuel tank is a unique saddle tank design and needs 30 to 60 seconds while the
engine is running to level the fuel in both half's of the fuel tank. Allowing the vehicle
to idle for this amount of time will let the fuel pump transfer fuel to the left side tank,
opening the control valve and allowing normal fuel filling.
4. Disconnect the vapor recirculation tube at the fuel tank.
5. Attempt to refill fuel tank.
6. Does tank refill properly?
a. Yes >> Proceed to Step #7
b. No>> Proceed to Step #11.
7. Reconnect the vapor recirculation tube at the fuel tank.
8. Disconnect the other end of the vapor recirculation tube at the fuel filler tube.
9. Attempt to refill fuel tank.
10. Does tank refill properly?
a. Yes >> Replace fuel filler tube.
b. No >> Replace the vapor recirculation tube.
11. Disconnect the control valve to EVAP canister tube at the fuel tank.

12. Reconnect the vapor recirculation tube at the fuel tank.
13. Does tank refill properly?
a. No >> Replace Fuel Tank.
b. Yes >> Proceed to Step #14.
14. Reconnect the control valve to EVAP canister tube at the fuel tank.
15. Disconnect the control valve to EVAP canister tube at the EVAP canister.

2007 Dodge Nitro 3.7 engine turn key but will not start. like not getting gas could this be a fuel pump problem.tapped on tank then nitro started

Would you not be better off just checking
fuel pressure at the motor with a gauge, since
for some reason the pump runs when you tap
on the fuel tank

My service engine soon light came on checked the code it said something about the evap system ?

There are a couple of different issues on this.

First off, the actual cel (check engine light) code would be extremely helpful it will be Pxxxx

Other than that, a general troubleshooting guide would be to check your gascap.
Remove the gascap, check for cracks in the rubber seal
Check for dents etc on the gas filler neck which would prevent a good seal
Reinstall the gascap ensuring it clicks a minimum of 3 clicks
If this is your problem, your code should go away in a few days. If you find problems with the gascap or filler neck, etc. then go ahead and repair them. This is the most common cause of evap issues.

The other issue i have seen with the evap system on a '01 blazer is the pressure sensor on the fuel pump going bad. Good news is that this part is roughly $40 dollars. Bad news is you may have to drop the fuel tank to get to it since it's mounted on the fuel pump most of the time, and the fuel pump is on the top middle(ish) of the fuel tank. I don't recommend dropping the fuel tank full. It'll weigh a lot. (28 gal x 6.1 lbs) + tank ~75 lbs.

Gascap comes on my dash. But the gascap is shut tight!

That doesn't mean that there is not gas escaping from it. Sometimes the seal isn't good and it will leak. I have actually had that problem and it didn't seem like the cap was bad at all. I replaced it and problem went away. So you probably wouldn't even know if it wasn't for the light. Hope that helped you out.

Dodge dakota 2005 -check engine light(gas cap)gas cap was replaced.Fuel spills out when filling tank.Fuel lines were smoked and no clog was found.

There is a check valve in the filler hose to stop fuel from coming out seems yours might be stuck , run a metal coat hangers inside the filler neck while prying open the little fill flap. see if that helps OR you are not or have no VENT to AIR in your evap system causing excessive tank pressure.
