Question about 1997 Jaguar XK8

With the key on (does not have to be running) and you press the brake, you should hear a click when the solenoid releases the lock mechanism for the shifter. If i does not release, there is a small plastic plug about 1/2 inch (1-2 cm) in diameter to the top left of the J-Gate track where the shift knob moves. It has a 6-pointed slot (large Torx) but can easily be unscrewed with a large screw driver. With plug removed, poke the screwdriver down the hole and you can manually release the shift mechanism - you will push against a slight spring pressure. That is what this hole is for. Problem could be brake switch, one of the computer modules, or solenoid. Good luck.

There's an electric solenoid that locks the gear selector. It is controlled by the vehicle computer. The vehicle computer checks to see that you're good to go (engine running) before releasing the gear shift solenoid. I had the vehicle computer go bad on me one day and the vehicle gear selector was locked in park. Towed my XK8 to a Jaguar dealer, a recycled vehicle computer installed, and solenoid release worked again for my car.

The SHiFT lock is broken or not pulling up when u disengage the reverse and PARK!
SHiFT LOCK is the one in ur SHiFTiNG KNOB, when u try to release the PAR or going to reverse u have to pull/press it!
The only way you could release and check it, is by dismantling the whole shifting console, and check where it is disconnected or go to the nearest garage to fix on that!
Hope that helps u out!
