Determine what cylinder is misfiring and do a compression test on that cylinder. Compare it with a cylinder that is not misfiring. You should have no more than 20% difference between the good cylinder and the bad cylinder. If it is low on compression, suspect a burn valve or bad valve seat... and it will require cylinder head repair. If it is good on compression, then look for a faulty injector or some other reason for the misfire on the dead cylinder.

These have a lot of problems with the ignition coils. In darkness look at the coils for any signs of stray spark. If stray spark is present the coils need to be replaced. Note- Use extreme caution around moving engine parts! Do not attempt this if you cannot do so safely.

Give me an update and we'll continue as necessary.

You may be faced with missing cylinders due to exhaust valves sticking or not seating/sealing well generally caused by excessive oil consumption through valve seals and poor fuel quality.Listen to the exhaust while idling in gear and you may hear popping and feel the suction inwards on your hand which helps indicate this problem exists.Perform compression test on all cylinders and should see no more than 20% variance in the compression readings. One last ditch effort before removing the head and servicing valves may be to replace valve seals and run chevron techron in fuel system and run engine at freeway speeds for an extended amount of miles. This is the only additive that has proven usefull with this problem but works best as a preventitive measure before cylinders start dropping.

SOURCE: my saturn sc2 2001 run

the fuel injectors can be the cause.first you must isolate which cylinder is shutting down. When the engine is missing pull plug wires one at a time to determine which one does not slow or make engine run worse. CAUTION: use rubber handle pliers or rubber glove to pull wires off plugs.

SOURCE: just replaced head gasket, PCV

Hi and welcome to FixYa!

One thing can cause this.... A faulty PCM (powertrain control module). The PCM has connectivity on all current that runs inside the car which includes the engine, transmission, accessories, etc. It's like a car's brain that when it's faulty something will surely fail. One good reason why you have misfires.

Please try to swap the car's computer to resolve the problem.

Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa! Have a good one!

2002 ford escort zx2 replaced fuel filter, air filter, plugs, and MAS...why won't it stay running?

it could be down to your spark plug leads take the leads out one by one and get somebody to hold the lead to the engine [to earth it] NOT WITH YOUR HAND with something thats not conductive like something plastic then try starting the engine to see if a spark jumps from the lead and repeat this please dont do this with your hand its very dangerous enouf voltage to knock you out!

I have an 1997 escort and its misfiring checked spark plugs 3 of them are fine the other one has oil in the well of it whats wrong with it.

perform a dry and then a wet compression test. if compression is greater on the wet then you have a bad ring in that cylinder. If compression stays the same then possible bad valve stem seal.

Did you get the wire on in the right spot? The coil should be marked for which cylinders they go to.

How do i change spark plugs on a ford escort sport

start from the left hand side of the engine as you are facing it, take one out at a time this way you will not mix up the HT leads ok.
Take the lead off number one plug and unscrew the old plug anticlockwise with a socket that fits the sparkplug, once you have done that put the new one in and tighten up clockwise and put the lead back on and push down so you hear a click but do not tighten up to tight or you weill damage the treads on the plug. Just enough so you feel the pressure on the racket. then do the same with all of them.

I hope this help's?

Change the spark plugs

there are 4 large wires at the front of the engine on the cylinder head, carefully remove them by twisting the rubber boots back and forth until they come off, under those are the spark plugs, u will need a 3/8" ratchet and a short socket extension with a 5/8" spark plug socket on it, put the socket over the plugs and remove them reinstall in reverse order, 10 minute job on an escort.

Replace the Spark Plug wires, they burn through and short to the valve cover/cylinder head causing a miss under load, very common concern with this Mazda engine that was used in your Escort GT. Buy the best wire set you can find, or the problem will re-occur very quickly. Auto-lite makes a good set at a good price, avail at most chain parts stores like Kragen, Auto Zone etc.
