Battery low, or dirty or loose battery, starter or ground connections.

It almost sounds like you need a new Battery, If you battery has been in there for more then 4 years. Good chance that it may not have the cranking amps to run the starter now, If you have a Multi meter, battery charger or another car to jump start the car. Try that first before we go off and buy a new starter. Make sure you have 12 volts and see if it stay's above 10.5 volts when starting the engine, if it falls below 10.5 the fuel injectors will not activate and the car still will not start. Good luck and hope this helps. Keep me posted, be glad to help.

New battery and good voltage readings, then we are to the end of the starters life. If you go to Auto Zone they will have the starter you need to replace the old one and will have the step by step instructions to replacing it. If it's to hot in your area and you can get the car started, most starter and alternator rebuilt shop will have a garage too that can install the starter for an extra $75.00 on top of the rebuilt starter and the average cost will be just under $200.00. If you don't mine getting a little dirt under your fingers then Auto Zone it is or the start rebuilt shop can sell you one, just bring the old on back first for credit on the core and the starter will be just around $100.00. Good luck and hope this helps.

If it clicks that points to the battery, check if the terminals are loose or get a new battery.

1989 nissan pickup 4 cylinder when i turn the key to crank the engine i hear a click sound at the starter what could the click sound be?

could be battery . It needs a huge amount of charge to turn over the starter motor. It may work the headlights but be unable to turn the starter motor.
Suggest get battery tested at a battery seller to see if battery is really ok .
The click is most likely the solenoid on the starter motor clicking on.
You might be able to get someone to run jumper leads
Note +ve to + ve and negative to negative !
from their car while the engine is running and their car is not moving !
Wait 10 minutes
Then try to crank over your car engine .

I jump started a 4wd vehicle a month ago from my car and it took about 10 minutes to get enough charge in it to crank over the engine !

My Intrepid won't start. Just one click and then a hum. Battery new. What might it be?

it sounds like ur starter to me one way to find out for sure before u take it off is to jack up car and on the starter there is a battery cable (big post) ignition wire (small post) carefully stick a small screwdriver between the two making contact with both and nothing else. If starter is good it will turn over... but it really does sound as if the starter is bad from what you said

My 2005 maxima wont start. when i turn the key there is a lot of clicking noises but no turn over. Is this a starter problem?

If it just clicks once when you turn the key it sounds like your battery. If it clicks multiple times when you turn the key, like a ratchiting sound, it is probably your starter.

Wont start but makes weird stuttering sound

Sounds like the battery is low on charge or is in need of replacement in most cases.
I would not change the starter until trying a new battery that is fully charged.

Turn key, and most times fires right up - other times it sounds like a grinding or stuttering sound and will not work

sounds like the teeth on flywheel are ground down in one area on the flywheel . take out starter check teeth on starter and flywheel . turn engine over with bolt on front of crankshaft and look in hole where starter is

perform a carbon load test on the battery
clean battery terminals

check for bad ignition contacts

clean all 3 starter terminals on the starter solnoid... careful with the connection between the solnoid and starter as they tend to seize.
