Which way does the thermostat sit in the housing?


looking at the thermostat there is a top section and a bottom section where the spring and wax bulb is located
that wax bulb section has to face the head water or block water as it requires the water temp to enlarger the wax bulb and open the valve letting water through to the top hose or in from the bottom hose
you didn't mention the make of car so be aware that some are in the top radiator housing in the head and others are in the bottom hose housing into the block
which ever you have the bulk of the thermostat goes into the hot water.

if you really mean a thermostat then yes , the bulk of the unit faces the hot water ,head or block

Is the 93 Mazda rx7 a traditional flow cooling system or a reverse flow cooling system... Meaning does the spring side of the thermostat face the "block" or the theremostat housing?


Hot water or air rises , water inlet goes in the lower part of the engine and exits at the highest point ,the thermostat control element must face the hot water.

Pcv valves


Remove the air cleaner housing to intake/throttle housing. Remove the shield over the throttle springs. Disconnect the cruise control and accelerator cables. Remove the throttle cable mounting bracket, push wiring harness out of your way. Disconnect the PCV hose at the intake manifold and remove the PCV valve.

Install door latch cable


Technical Instructions
See picture below
1. Remove door trim panel and water shield per
NOTE: Place a strip of masking tape along the edge of door before removing trim panel to prevent scratching the door with the trim panel removal tool.

2. Snap cable housing end from slot on inside door handle assembly and disconnect cable.
NOTE: Use care to prevent bending of cable housing retainer bracket.

3. Remove rear window channel retaining bolt to allow access to door latch.

4. Position a block (screwdriver handle) between the latch and the door inner panel and snap the cable housing end out of slot (towards inner panel) on door latch assembly and disconnect cable at latch.
NOTE: Use care when removing cable housing to avoid bending of the latch. Discard cable.

5. Hook up new cable at latch and snap cable housing end into slot.
NOTE: Make sure the cable housing is fully seated in the slot.

6. Apply a light film of Teflon grease to the barrel end of the cable. See Figure A.

7. Install return spring. See Figure A.
NOTE: Ensure that the push button rod is located between the spring and the door inner panel.

8. Install foam block at latch. See Figure A.

9. Position water shield over the return spring and install push pin to retain upper portion of water shield. See Figure B.
NOTE: Push pin goes in the same hole as the return spring.

10. Clean hands of grease before performing step 11.

11. Remove protective backing along the lower edges only of the water shield. See Figure A.

12. Install latch water shield at door latch. Pinch the exposed adhesive surfaces together to secure the water shield. Check to insure water shield is not showing through the door shut-face latch access hole. See Figure B.

13. Attach cable to inside door handle assembly and snap cable housing into slot.
NOTE: Make sure the cable housing is fully seated.

14. Check the gap as shown in remote control using a 3/16 drill bit shank end. The drill bit shank should fit in the gap without any clearance and a tight fit is preferred. See Figure C.

15. If the drill bit is too loose or does not fit, adjust by bending the cable bracket as required.

16. Place plastic wedge on remote bracket as shown. Wedge must fit with at least a light press fit for retention. See Figure D.

17. After installation, Apply a dab of special Teflon grease, supplied with the service cable to cable housing openings at inside handle end. The grease should surround and contact the cable all the way around, to seal the opening between the cable and the cable housing.

18. Check all latch functions to insure correct assembly of latch system. If the inside handle does not release properly, replace the inside handle remote release mechanism.

19. Reposition and install trim panel using new push pins if required.

Thermostat REMOVAL & INSTALLATION CAUTION
When draining the coolant, keep in mind that cats and dogs are attracted by ethylene glycol antifreeze, and are quite likely to drink any that is left in an uncovered container or in puddles on the ground. This will prove fatal in sufficient quantity. Always drain the coolant into a sealable container. Coolant should be reused unless it is contaminated or several years old. E-Series Engines NOTE: The engine thermostat is housed in the water outlet casting on the cylinder head.
  1. Open the draincock on the radiator and drain the coolant into a suitable drain pan.
  2. Remove the upper radiator hose from the water outlet side and remove the bolts securing the water outlet to the cylinder head.
  3. On E16 models, remove the exhaust air induction tube clamp bolts, then the water outlet bolts.
  4. Remove the water outlet and thermostat. To install:
  5. Clean off the old gasket from the mating surfaces with a razor blade or equivalent.
  6. When installing the thermostat, be sure to install a new gasket and be sure the air bleed hole in the thermostat is facing the left side (or upward) of the engine and that the spring is toward the inside of the engine. Also make sure that the new thermostat to be installed is equipped with an air bleed hole.

  1. Disconnect the negative (-) battery cable and drain the coolant from the radiator and the left side draincocks on the cylinder block.
  2. On GA16i engines, disconnect the water temperature switch connector from the thermostat housing.
  3. Remove the radiator hose from the water outlet side and remove the bolts securing the water outlet to the cylinder head.
  4. Remove the thermostat and clean off the old gasket or sealant from the mating surfaces. To install:
  5. Install the thermostat with a new gasket. When installing the thermostat, be sure to install a new gasket or sealant and be sure the air bleed hole in the thermostat is facing the left side or upward on the engine. The jiggle valve must always face up. Also make sure the new thermostat to be installed is equipped with an a ir bleed hole. Some thermostats have the word TOP stamped next to the jiggle valve. Again, the word TOP and the jiggle valve must be facing up. NOTE: When using RTV sealant instead of gaskets, make sure the surface you are working on is very clean before applying the sealant, then apply an even bead. Allow the RTV to dry slightly to form a thin skin. The component MUST be tightened before the RTV dries completely. The bolt torque should be checked again after RTV has completely dried.
  6. Install the water outlet and upper radiator hose.
  7. On GA16i engines, connect the water temperature switch connector to the thermostat housing.
  8. Fill the cooling system and connect the negative (-) battery cable.
  9. Bleed the cooling system as outlined in this section.

Allow the RTV to dry slightly to form a thin skin. The component MUST be tightened before the RTV dries completely. The bolt torque should be checked again after RTV has completely dried.
  6. When installing the thermostat, be sure to install a new gasket and be sure the air bleed hole in the thermostat is facing upward and that the spring is toward the inside of the engine.
  7. Install the water outlet and tighten the bolts.
    • GA16DE — 13–16 ft. lbs. (18–22 Nm)
    • SR20DE — 60–72 inch lbs. (6–8 Nm)
  8. Install the remaining components in the reverse order of removal. prev.gif next.gif

1996 Bravada heater doesn't seem to throw hot


the temp control on your dash operates a hot water valve under hood, it's probably vacuum aparated, like the doors in the heater housing, the valve may be close to heater core,check for vacuum leaks around dash control, totally unrelated leaks can cause problems, and yes a blocked heater core can definitly cause the problem,but I would save that unless it's easy to get at, eliminate other stuff first, luck

Defrost will not come out vents


Check your coolant level first. Next check your heater control valve. With engine at operating temp and heater on high, do this:

1. Heater hose from water pump should be hot (if not, water pump may be dead or thermostat is stuck closed)
2. Heater hose from thermostat housing should be hot (if not, thermostat may be stuck closed or water pump is dead)
3. Heater hose going to heater core should be hot ( if not, heater control valve is not getting vacuum from heater control unit, or valve is broken)
4. Heater hose returning from heater core should be hot (if not, heater core is blocked, undo both hoses to core and flush with water hose until clear)

Test thermostat: with cold engine cranked, watch water temp gauge. As it gets hotter and hotter, when the thermostat opens, the temp should drop suddenly and then go back up.

Test water pump: with engine at operating temp. Squeeze top radiator hose tight, when you release it, you should feel/hear a surge of water. It is much like when you pinch a water hose closed and release it.

Test vacuum from heater control unit to heater control valve: undue vacuum line from control valve. It should have a vacuum when pressed against you skin in addition to releasing the actuating arm on the control valve.

If there is no vacuum, a quick fix will be to disconnect the plastic actuator from the silver arm on the heater valve. This will let the hot water to always flow to your heater core.
