I would also check the belt tensioner, it could cause the belt to get misaligned. When the a/c is on, there is more pressure on the belt & tensioner.

When I turn on the air conditioning it squeeks very loud. I just put in new belts. A friend said the tension is goon. How do I know if the compressor is bad

  • I would start with a can or brake clean and spray some of that on your belt as it is turning and see if there is some dirt on the belt making it squeal.
  • It can be a week tensioner. You can look with a flashlight as the belt is turning to see if you see the tension pulley is popping up and loosing tension.
  • While there with the flashlight make sure the belt is running strait.
  • A couple ways to know if the compressor is bad. First you will hear it squeal real bad or grind real bad ans you run the AC. This is an indicator of the bearings gone bad. You can also remove the belt and just give the compressor pulley a few spins. It should spin free with no hang ups or noises.
  • I would suggest that while the belt is off you spin all the pulleys to see if they spin free without any noises. Naturally the crank won't spin by hand but all the others should.
  • Also keep in mind that on rare occasions even a new belt can be bad and another new one will be needed.

  • Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa.

2001 dodge stratus air conditioning compressor failed bearings gone can i bypass system with a different belt

you can but it is a lot of work. many pulley changes bracket changes. you have to find the same engine that does not have AC and take all needed parts off of that. it is not worth it. consider just going to a salvage yard and getting a used compressor. it doesnt even have to work, it just has to have good bearings. it would be a lot less work going this route. any questions, reply back

The serpentine belt went out of its place

Hi, Have you checked your pulleys to make sure all are turning freely, and idler pulley center bearing not gone out .Take your hand and see if it has alot of movement in it like up & down or side to side , do the same thing to water pump they are bad about the bearing going out on pump. This will throw your belt off . If i can help you anymore feel free to re post.
Thanks dodge tec

I have a 1998 Dodge Dakota 4x4, I notice a noise when turning.

You need to check your brakes ASAP. You may have metal on metal on your front pads. You may have a bearing problem if the brakes are in good shape. But check it out as soon as you can to prevent further damage.

Air conditioner cools but pulley skeals and breaks belt what could it be?

Make sure the compressor has enough oil in it. I hope it is not in the brink of being damaged. It could also be a case of the belt not tight enough provided it was installed properly. The last thing I can think of is the bearing within the compressor is defective. When the belt is off try turning the compressor by hand back and fort to determine if the bearing is bad.

Two days after I had a new starter installed in my 02 durango, the A/C quit and there was a loud "blower" noise coming from the engine compartment. I lifted the hood and the noise was from the serpentine...

It sounds like the a/c compressor bearnig has gone bad and seized, but check the other pully bearing like the idler and tension bearing just to eleiminate the other bearing for failure. Good luck and keep me posted. If it is the compressor bearing that went bad, you can remove the a/c compressor and buy a serpintine belt that is smaller for your dodge without the a/c compressor. Make sure you know the routing of the belt without the compressor. Good luck and keep me posted.

Need to replace the alternator

There should be a spring loaded pulley with either a nut or a square hole for a socket drive to turn it and take the spring load off of the belt while you change it.
