Get the OBD codes read as may be a sensor/switch also have the alternator charge rate checked at idle as may be low and the fan cutting in is using the power up

Hi,

Firstly, ensure you have the required 'mixture' of coolant/water (must have required coolant).

Second, I would recommend you re-test all the cooling system sensors again (make sure they're within specifications), in case a new one is faulty.

Third, ensure the new thermostat was of the correct temp setting (they all differ), so that it opens at the required time. Most cooling systems operate within 90 - 100degC.

Fourth, make sure the radiator (and associated hoses) aren't blocked.

If your temp gauge is reading higher than normal, but NOT in the danger zone...then this can be considered normal (especially if you've replaced with new components) and nothing to be concerned about.

However, if the temp gauge IS in the danger zone....then this suggests the coolant is not flowing through the cooling system properly.

If all above components test ok, then it's possible your water pump may not be pumping enough volume.

Cheers,

Why does my car engine overheat after 25 minutes driving? open road or town. also has rough idling.

1. Make sure the electric radiator fan(s) is kicking in when the coolant temperature gets hot. If not that will be part of the problem and if the temperature sensor/switch is faulty the fans may not operate.

2. You may have a restriction in the cooling system that is significantly retarding the flow of coolant through the engine coolant passages or through the radiator. This can be caused by a build up of debris in the system so you cannot achieve optimum coolant flow.

3. You may have a combustion leak via a failed cylinder head gasket into the cooling system. This will cause hot combustion gasses to flow from the cylinder into the cooling system and the coolant will overheat. Bubbles showing up in the cooling system is a possible indication of that. A leak down test will show this up. This involves blowing compressed air into the cylinders one by one through the spark plug openings. If air enters the cooling system in this test bubbles will appear in the coolant and it is a sign of a failed cylinder head gasket and that combustion gasses are able to escape into the cooling system when the engine is running.

4. THE rough idle may be a low RPM miss fire in one or more cylinders. You need to have the vehicle scanned to see what fault codes the computer is generating. If you have rough idle once the engine has warmed up there will be one or more fault codes being generated. Once scanned and all the fault codes are found, the cause of the fault codes can be investigated and the problem fixed.

5. Do not hesitate to have the problem of the overheating checked out. Running the car with the engine overheating WILL cause expensive engine damage many times more than it will cost to fix the problem now. If you have been running the engine frequently in an overheated condition you may well have already caused failure of the cylinder head gasket but I hope this is not the case. Running the engine overheated can also cause the cylinder head to warp and crack. These are expensive engine repairs you definitely want to avoid.

6. You did not indicate the year, model of vehicle and engine type you have. Please provide this information if you have future questions as this normally has a direct bearing on the content of answers people are able to provide.

My car is turning over fine but it's not trying to start it's a 4 Cylinder and the timing belt was replaced about 10 months ago. I smell gas while trying to crank it.

I had this issue recently with my 1992 Camry with the 2.2 motor. I had to replace the coil that is inside the distributor. This got the car running, it is about $40 at the auto parts stores. Then car was intermittently running rough. I removed the throttle body and Idle Air Control valve and cleaned them both. Seemed to improve starting but still was idling rough when warmed up. Some of the Toyota forums I read suggested replacing the Engine Coolant Temperature sensor ($20) so I began to pull the connector off to check it when it broke in half. Put the new one on and is running well now. When this sensor goes bad, the computer thinks the engine is cold even after it warms up so it gives it more fuel, and this floods the engine. Hope this gives you some ideas to try.

1995 Camry Le 4 cylinder code 25 rough idle what can i do?

If the engine runs good and is not rough then you may just have a defective O2 sensor. The sensor is located in the exhaust pipe just off the engine. See picture below.9_7_2012_11_27_08_pm.jpg

My 98 camry is idling rough at start up for 5 to 10 seconds. Then it runs fine, blowing a bit of white smoke but not much also loosing coolant out of the radiator no visible leaks.

You've got a blown head gasket, sounds small at this point, but it will get bigger. If you want to save this engine I would stop driving it.

My 91 oldsmobile 98 runs rough in idle but when driving run smooth.

Rough idle is a very common problem on 4 cylinders, but I believe the 98 Regency has a 6 cylinder in it, right?

Sometimes the coil packs get iffy, and sometimes the EGR Valve gets a leak in it causing a rough idle.

When the accelerator pedal is depressed, it can change things so that the engine seems to run smoothly.

However, I would look for codes to see if anything intermittent is occurring in the engine that may need attention.

The OBD-I scanner can help to diagnose the problem, if anything is out of specifications on the engine in question.

The owner will have to find a technician that has such a scanner.

Same issue with the rough idle with a warm engine 4.0 Ranger

i would think a plugged fuel injector on # 6 cylinder could be the problem,or a big vacuum leak at that cylinder
a valve burnt/stuck could be but you dont see much of that anymore
could be coolant leaking into cylinder from leaky haed gasket but you would have to add coolant every so often
i would check #6 cyl. spark plug after driveing around a while if it looks new, ie no deposits on it then an injector would be what i would change next
