Check that the engine vacuum is operating as this is what opens/closes the IMRC valve(s) , all hoses are connected correctly let me know how you get on

2004 ford f 150 5.4 3V pulled intake fixed vac hose came off replaced imrc & still show intake runner control closed bank 1 Still has no power when I get in it to pass something any ideas?

There are three basic types of intake air sub-systems:


  • Intake Manifold Runner Control (IMRC) electric actuated system

  • Intake Manifold Swirl Control (IMSC) vacuum actuated system

  • Intake Manifold Tuning Valve (IMTV)

These subsystems are used to provide increased intake airflow to improve torque, emissions and performance. The overall quantity of air metered to the engine is controlled by the throttle body.

Intake Manifold Runner Control (IMRC) Electric Actuated System
The Intake Manifold Runner Control (IMRC) Electric Actuated system (Figure 107) consists of a remote mounted motorized actuator with an attaching cable for each housing on each bank. Some applications will use one cable for both banks. The cable or linkage attaches to the housing butterfly plate levers. The 2.0L (2V) Focus IMRC uses a motorized actuator mounted directly to a single housing without the use of a cable. Each IMRC housing is an aluminum casting with two intake air passages for each cylinder. One passage is always open and the other is opened and closed with a butterfly valve plate. The housing uses a return spring to hold the butterfly valve plates closed. The motorized actuator houses an internal switch or switches, depending on the application, to provide feedback to the PCM indicating cable and butterfly valve plate position.



Below approximately 3000 rpm, the motorized actuator will not be energized. This will allow the cable to fully extend and the butterfly valve plates to remain closed. Above approximately 3000 rpm, the motorized actuator will be energized. The attaching cable will pull the butterfly valve plates into the open position. Some vehicles will activate the IMRC near 1500 rpm.



WARNING: SUBSTANTIAL OPENING AND CLOSING TORQUE IS APPLIED BY THIS SYSTEM. TO PREVENT INJURY, BE CAREFUL TO KEEP FINGERS AWAY FROM LEVER MECHANISMS WHEN ACTUATED.




  1. The PCM uses the TP sensor and CKP signals to determine activation of the IMRC system. There must be a positive change in voltage from the TP sensor along with the increase in rpm to open the valve plates.




  1. The PCM uses the information from the input signals to control the IMRC motorized actuator based upon rpm and changes in throttle position.




  1. The PCM energizes the actuator to pull the butterfly plates open with the cable(s) or linkage.




  1. The IMRC housing contains butterfly plates to allow increased air flow.

Mil comes on with p2004/ check valve stuck open. Where is the check valve located


P2004 - Intake manifold runner control (IMRC) stuck open (bank 1)
Description - This DTC is set when the IMRC is commanded closed, but the IMRC monitor indicated open. This DTC replaces P1518 and P1537.

Probable causes - IMRC monitor signal circuit shorted to PWR GND or SIG RTN
- Damaged IMRC actuator or solenoid
- Blocked vacuum hoses

Diagnostic aids - Monitor the IMRC and IMRCM PIDs. The IMRCM state should change when the IMRC is commanded open or closed.

This control valve generally is located on the back of the intake.

CODE P1537 - INTAKE MANIFOLD RUNNER CONTROL MALFUNCTION BANK 1 STUCK OPEN. POSSIBLE CAUSES. IMRC MONITOR SIGNAL CIRCUIT SHORTED TO POWER GROUND. IMRC MONITOR SIGNAL CIRCUIT SHORTED TO SIGNAL GROUND RETURN. IMRC ACTUATOR IS DAMAGED OR THE PCM HAS FAILED. - IMRC - IS INTAKE MANIFOLD RUNNER CONTROL.

My 98 ford windstar is displaying trouble codes p1537/p1538, along with a misfire on cylinder 1 & 2 (p0301/p0302). what are some problems that can cause this problem?


Codes p1537 and p 1538 are codes for a faulty IMRC valve. They are located on the lower intake manifold.

Intake Manifold Runner Control (IMRC), Vacuum Control
  1. Remove E-clip retaining vacuum control linkage to lever/shaft assembly.
  1. Remove adjustment screw from the vacuum control (9S514) and bracket.
  1. Remove two bolts retaining vacuum control and bracket to IMRC housing assembly.
  1. Disconnect linkage from the lever/shaft assembly and remove vacuum control .
  1. To install vacuum control and bracket assembly, reverse Removal procedure. Tighten retaining bolts to 8-11 Nm (71-97 lb-in). Adjust vacuum control as described.

As for the misfire codes, Check out the upper and lower intake gaskets. Since you have to take the upper intake off for the imrc valves its just a few more bolts to remove the lower intake. The intake gaskets are rubber seals. When the engine is cold the seals shrink and causes a misfire. when the engine warms up the seals expand and the misfire goes away.

code p1518= intake manifold runner control (IMRC) malfunction (stuck open)

the intake manifold has two runners per cylinder, feeding each of the cylinder heads
the IMRC assemblies are located between the intake manifold and two air passages for each cylinder.
one air passage is always open and the other passage switches from means of a valve plate.
below 3000 rpm, this valve plate is closed to improve low speed performance.
above 3000 rpm, this valve plate opens to improve high-speed exceleration.
the valve plates are opened and closed by the IMRC deactivation by the powertrain control module
(pcm) if your car or truck is not affected by the error code, the pcm may need to be reprogrammed
so that the error does not come up again. or you can connect an obd2 scanner and reset ever y time
it comes up. good luck!

you need to make sure that the control solenoid has vacuum and power and ground at the connector, or it will set that code. as long as you did not drop the plenum would should be fine, locate the control solenoid you should be fine

I have a 96 lincoln mark it i am getting the code


The actual IMRC intake manifold runner control, consists of an extra set of valves that over time can stick in one direction or the other open/closed. They are repaired by removing the intake manifold and de-gunked. Its pretty labor intensive.
