Question about Cars & Trucks
Sounds like the transmission, has failed. Easy thing to do is check the fluid level. Usually with the vehicle idling in park. If the fluid level is ok. Does it look dark or smell burnt? I would bet it has failed though

First check the selector rod or cable to be sure it selects the right gear.
Check fluid level as well. The planetery gears may be shot!

check the fluid level and for a clogged filter in the trans. Is it making a buzzing noise like it's sucking air?
Not a sensor or solenoid problem.

Testimonial: "that is helpful"
Yeah, same thing happened to a lot of folks. The transmission has a flaw that causes the 'stuck in neutral' syndrome. Ford will do nothing for you and will not even acknowledge that there is a problem. Check it out for yourself, there are hundreds of complaints posted on the internet and it's about a $2500 repair. Should have been a recall or at least a TSB. Ford has no desire to stand behind their product and repair/replace the faulty transmissions. Way to go and the thanks we get for 'buying American'.

OK, I would first check the fluid level in the transmission to verify that it's full or topped off.
Usually transmission fluid and filter changes will not correct physical problems with the solenoid not going into reverse, and get rid of strange noises.
Changing the fluid is more like a preventative measure against malfunctions, but once damage is done it's probably permanent.
You probably are looking at a transmission rebuild in this case, unfortunately.
