Sounds like the transmission, has failed. Easy thing to do is check the fluid level. Usually with the vehicle idling in park. If the fluid level is ok. Does it look dark or smell burnt? I would bet it has failed though

First check the selector rod or cable to be sure it selects the right gear.
Check fluid level as well. The planetery gears may be shot!

SOURCE: I have a 98 lincoln continental with automatic

check the fluid level and for a clogged filter in the trans. Is it making a buzzing noise like it's sucking air?

Not a sensor or solenoid problem.

SOURCE: Transmission stopped working suddenly

Yeah, same thing happened to a lot of folks. The transmission has a flaw that causes the 'stuck in neutral' syndrome. Ford will do nothing for you and will not even acknowledge that there is a problem. Check it out for yourself, there are hundreds of complaints posted on the internet and it's about a $2500 repair. Should have been a recall or at least a TSB. Ford has no desire to stand behind their product and repair/replace the faulty transmissions. Way to go and the thanks we get for 'buying American'.

SOURCE: My reverse transmission stop working

OK, I would first check the fluid level in the transmission to verify that it's full or topped off.

Usually transmission fluid and filter changes will not correct physical problems with the solenoid not going into reverse, and get rid of strange noises.

Changing the fluid is more like a preventative measure against malfunctions, but once damage is done it's probably permanent.

You probably are looking at a transmission rebuild in this case, unfortunately.

How do I fix the transmission problem? The car is moving forward at neutral, drive and low gear, and switching to parking mode at reverse and parking. The car is not backing up at all.

Transmission may now be toast since you continued to drive it when maybe low on fluid or torque converter had failed. How long since last fluid and filter change? Ever?

Why would a vehicle in reverse move forward

The question is a little vague but I think I know what your referring to. All modern automatic transmissions have torque converters. This is the device that connects the engine to the transmission. All vehicle manufacturers like the trans to be nice and smooth shifting. That's great but it does come with some minor drawbacks. If you are facing slightly down hill and you put your car in reverse but do not step on the gas slightly I can guarantee that you will indeed roll forward. You can eliminate that issue by holding your left foot on the brake while you shift into reverse. Then, as soon as you feel the trans engage, gently depress the gas pedal with your right foot and it will eliminate that forward roll problem.

I was wondering if you can help me out, I have a 1992 Nissan Terrano 3Lt V6 4x4, its just an old farm truck, Well today I was driving it down the paddock and all of a sudden it wont move in any gear,...

If it is an automatic, and absoloutely no movement it sounds like the torque convertor has failed. Either impellor or turbine. If it is a manual the clutch may have gone. If it is a manual, place it in gear and get a friend to rock the car back and forward. See if you notice any movement of the harmonic balancer/belts in the engine bay?

The transmission solenoids are not working properly. Probably requires a transmission rebuild.
I don't think it's in the ground strap or wiring.
It's an internal problem with the transmission.

Probably the wave spring washer which is a common failure on these transmissions. Check the pan for metal parts if this happens. You'll have to replace it if so, but make sure they use the updated, thicker washer (part # 2741A007).

this problem is caused by the reverse clutch pack being worn out, this will require the trans to be torn down and overhauled.

You need to have it towed to wherever you'll be having it worked on. It sounds to me like your transmission has locked up. Since you cannot shift and your wheels will not move. You'll probably have to have your transmission replaced, or fixed at the least.
