Under your dash attatched to the steering column is your shift tube, at the end is a ball that your linkage goes too, that part has 2 T25 torx screws holding it to the shift tube, those screws are notorious for comming loose

REMOVAL
1. Remove air cleaner and air intake hose assembly.
2. Remove center dash trim panel.
3. Remove center console cup holder assembly.
4. Remove floor console assembly.
5. Remove console side panels.
6. Remove Transmission Control Module ftMJ bracket.
1. Remove TCM.
8. Remove shifter cable from transaxle operating lever by removing nut and clip.
9. Remove shifter cable from shifter lever assembly by removing clip.
10. Remove shifter cable from shifter lever mechanism.
11. Remove cable from firewall grommet by removing grommet assembly nuts.
12. Remove gearshift cable from vehicle.
ADJUSTMENT
Lift and rotate the gearshift hand lever into the park (F9 gate position and remove the ignition
key. This confirms the shift lever is in the gated park (F9 position.
After confirming the park gate position. turn the ignition switch . If the starter will operate. the
park gate position is correct. Move the shift lever into the neutral (NJ position. If the starter
will operate in this position, the linkage is properly adjusted. If the starter fails to operate in
either position, linkage adjustment is required.
1. Park the vehicle on level ground and set the parking brake.
2. Place the gearshift lever in park (F9 gate position and remove key.
3. Loosen the cable adjustment screw at the transaxle operating lever.
4. Pull the transaxle operating lever fully forward to the park detent position.
5. Release the park brake, then rock the vehicle to assure it is in park lock. Reset the park
brake.
6. Tighten the cable adjustment screw to 8 Nm (10 inch Ibs.J. Gearshift cable should now be
properly adjusted.
1. Check adjustment by usinq the precedinq procedure.

T700 in my camro wont go into reverse or netraul .Car hasnt been move for about 1 month was fine last time in drove it .It has all forward gears even where park and netraul are any help would good thanks


sounds to me like the shift linkage came loose at the tranny end. On the driverside of the tranny there is a cable hooked the side of the tranny. At the end of the cable there should be a slot that a bolt goes through and attaches to a little arm on the tranny. Loosen the bolt put the gearshifter in park then push that arm as far forward as you can you might have to push hard or pry it forward. Then tighten the bolt down. then try it out and see how it works. You just adjusted your shift linkage. Let me no if that worked or not. Goodluck, Kyle

Gearshift seems to have broken linkage..no connection with gears. Can it be fixed (ie, broken linkage) or does it need to be replaced?


there is a common problem with the shift cable bushing. so take out the console and examine the connection between the cable ends and the shifter levers. possibly the cheap little repair kits they sell on ebay for less than 20 bucks will set you right. if the cables themselves are broken, you need to get another set of those, cheaper at autozone or advance than at a dealer.

You will have to lubricate your shift mechanism. Shift Linkage —Transmission Gearshift Rod and Clevis Removal
  1. Raise and support the vehicle;
  1. Remove the heat shield front (RH) bolt.
  2. Remove the heat shield middle (RH)& (LH) bolts.
  3. Remove the heat shield middle (LH) bolt.
  4. Remove the heat shield rear bolt.
  5. Remove the transmission gearshift rod-to-shift lever nut.

    7.Remove the transmission gearshift lever clamp bolt and the transmission gearshift rod and clevis .c37044a.gif
8.Remove the transmission gearshift rod nut.

You may not have to remove the linkage but make sure to lubricate all the moving parts until they are freely moving. Although it is probably easier if the linkage is removed and work done on a bench or something.
Drain Procedure
  1. Raise and support the vehicle;
  2. Remove the drain plug and drain the fluid. 8af8970.gif
  3. NOTE: Use a new gasket on the drain plug.
    Install the drain plug.
  4. Tighten plug to 29-40 ft/lbs
Fill Procedure
  1. Park the vehicle on level ground and apply the parking brake.
  1. Disconnect the vehicle speed sensor (VSS) electrical connector.

    3.Remove the bolt and the VSS.

    2875e67.gif 5. Add the specified transaxle fluid until the full level on the VSS is reached.

    it sounds like your gearshift cable is broken..if you can jack up vehicle and support it safely,get someone to move shifter and look on driver's side of transmission and see if linkage is moving on trans..linkage is up near top of trans..i have seen this problem before

    Ok, remove the console so you can look at the shifter, there is a plastic piece that attaches the cable to the shifter knob, this breakes, you can go to Saturn ,but they want almost $200 for both cables (they don't sell the plastic piece) BUT THERE IS GOOD NEWS, Napa sells the plastic replacement part at a cost of $20 I am assuming that your car is a manual, part is fairly easy to install,(remove the shifter without removing the cables)

    You may have a loose shift linkage in the steering column. Remove the upper and lower plastic covers behind the steerong wheel (5 or 6 philips head) and see if you have any loose torx head or allen head screws. Ea
    rlier models had this isue.

    1. Place the gearshift lever in PARK (P) position.
    1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Section 100-02 .
    1. Remove the splash shield.
    1. Loosen the shift cable nut.
    1. Position the shift linkage in PARK (P) position.
    1. Tighten the shift cable nut.

    under the dash on driver side thare is a gearshift cable bracket. get a flashlight and remove the underdash cover then look under dash while wiggling gearshift and you will see gearshift cable.the bracket that holds this cable has 2 or 3 screws and over time will back out and cause shifting problems. thay need to be tightend. these screws have torx bit heads on them so you will need a torx bit set to tighten

    I have a Mariner outboard engine which requires the water pump to be removed for repair. The gear shift linkage once disconnected from the oprating lever will not pass through the casing in the engine...


    In order to disconnect the gearshift linkage from the gearshift operating handle, a safety clip was rotated about 90 degrees clockwise. Once in this position, if you pull the safety clip towards you, it comes completely out, which then permits the gearshift rod to seperate from the operating lever.
