No, because the incoming air to the engine has been measured by the mass air flow sensor in the big hose from air cleaner to the throttle body. If the air hoses are not sealed tight, extra air not measured by the sensor will make it run poorly.

check air filter and also clean out the idle valve also check the breather pipes coming off the cam cover. one goes to the intake pipe and one goes to the bottom off the intake chamber thin one that will be block for definite as they do. on the back of the engine there is a black pipe coming off the cam cover and goes to a metal pipe take that off clean out the ends and you will need somthing like a long metal bit of strip and put a hook on the end push that down the hole and lift out the burnt oil push down until when it comes out there is oil on the end. then that end is clear then. on the thine pipe off the cam cover you need to clean the pipe out and this is the difficult bit the part were it fits to the intake you need to clean that out it is hard to get to but you can do it without having to take it all apart. when clean and putting back together i used an inline fuel filter on this line and it stops it clogging up the line. when all clean out and put back together and check that it blows out the oil cap and not sucks engine should be fine after this. I have had to do this one time on mine ecotec engine did it 6 years back and is still nice and clear run for a few days then change the engine oil and filter. jobs done.

look under and around the iar filter /engine cover for a sensor with a vacumn pipe attached ,think thats the renault but i just cannot remember but it causes this fault ,failing which check the fuel filter for sucking in air by pressuring the system with a electric pump and looking for leaks connect to pipe from fuel tank and outlet to where the pipe connects and then run pump to look for leaks ,the fuel filter is at the front of the engine ,then if no leaks check the reading on the mass air flow sensor ,a OBDII cheap code reader will do this by checking all the pids it will show timing and air temp ect and this vehicle can be read with one depending on year

Honest, there are over 3,000 reasons that it could be, but one thing about engines hasn't changed. They need FUEL, AIR and SPARK. Check to see that it has all three (like pick a piston easy to get at (if you have the tools, I 'assume' too much quite often) and see if it is getting "fire", if so is there fuel pressure? ... (as for "air" just make sure nothing has taken up residence in the air intake filter or pipes ...lol).

Overreving with no power and excessive gas consumption air filter cleaned map sensor replaced fuel pump and filter


usually caused by busted diaphram in fuel pressure regulator allowing fuel to be drawn thru regulator directly to intake manifold. Pull vacuum line off regulator, plug line with golf tee, start car and watch to see if gas comes out of regulator. If yes, turn off car, replace regulator. The regulator sits near the fuel rail on the top of the engine as shown below. I will paste replacement instructions below from autozone.com in case you need to replace the regulator. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Removal & Installation

4.2L Engine

  1. Relieve the fuel system pressure.
  2. Remove the air cleaner outlet resonator.
  3. Disconnect the engine wiring harness from the retaining clips at the front of the engine.
  4. Disconnect the fuel pressure regulator vacuum line.
  5. Clean any dirt from the fuel pressure regulator and the surrounding area.
  6. Disconnect the fuel return pipe.
  7. Remove the fuel return pipe retainer.
  8. Remove the fuel pressure regulator retainer.
  9. Remove the fuel pressure regulator.
  10. Inspect the regulator filter screen for contamination. If contaminated, replace the fuel pressure regulator.

To install:
  1. Install the regulator filter.
  2. Install the new O-ring on the fuel pressure regulator.
  3. Lubricate the fuel pressure regulator O-ring with clean engine oil.
  4. Push the fuel pressure regulator into the regulator housing on the fuel rail.
  5. Install the fuel pressure regulator retainer. Tighten the regulator retainer screw to 71 inch lbs. (8 Nm).
  6. Install the fuel return pipe retainer. Tighten the return pipe retainer screw to 71 inch lbs. (8 Nm).
  7. Connect the fuel return pipe.
  8. Connect the fuel pressure regulator vacuum line.
  9. Connect the negative battery cable.
  10. Inspect for leaks:
    1. Turn ON the ignition for 2 seconds.
    2. Turn OFF the ignition for 10 seconds.
    3. Turn ON the ignition.
    4. Inspect for fuel leaks.

  11. Install the engine wiring harness into the retaining clips at the front of the engine.
  12. Install the air intake resonator.

The mass air flow sensor will be fitted in the pipe work that comes from the air filter housing. Find the air filter housing and in the round pipe that goes towards the engine, there will be a wiring connector. this will be connected to your mass air flow sensor. Hope this helps

How to change the fuel filter


Fuel Filter The filter should be inspected for external damage and/or leakage at least once a year. The fuel filter should be changed only as necessary. Toyota Motor Corporation recommends replacing the carbureted fuel filters at 15,000 miles and 30,000 miles on fuel injected models. NOTE: Fuel lines and connections, fuel tank vapor vent system hoses and fuel tank bands should be inspected every 60,000 miles or every 36 months. The fuel tank cap gasket should be replaced 60,000 miles or every 72 months.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION Carbureted Engines The fuel filter on carbureted engines is a plastic cylinder with two ports for the fuel. It is usually located in the engine compartment near the charcoal canister.
  1. Using a pair of pliers, expand the hose clamp on one side of the filter, and slide the clamp further down the hose, past the point to which the filter pipe extends. Remove the other clamp in the same manner. Grasp the clamps and slide them up the hose slightly above the filter ends 88271p10.jpg

  2. Grasp the hoses near the ends and twist them gently to pull them free from the filter pipe. Slide the hose off the end of the fuel filter end 88271p11.jpg

  3. Pull the filter from the clip and discard. Be carefull when removing the filter, some fuel may spill out if not held upright 88271p12.jpg
    To install:
  4. Install the new filter into the clip. The arrow must point towards the hose that runs to the carburetor.
  5. Push the hoses onto the filter pipes, then slide the clamps back into position.
  6. Start the engine and check for leaks.
Fuel Injected Engines 1993-97 MODELS
  1. Turn the ignition switch to the LOCK position. Disconnect the negative battery cable and wait at least 90 seconds before proceeding with working on the fuel system. This will depressureize the fuel system. The fuel filter can be hard to locate on these engines 88271pa1.jpg

    CAUTION
    Failure to depressurise the fuel system could cause personal injury.
  2. Disconnect the Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor wiring.
  3. Loosen the air cleaner hose clamp bolt, the disconnect the four air cleaner cap clips. Fig. 6: Loosen the air cleaner hose clamp bolt 88271g04.gif

  4. Spearate the air cleaner hose from the throttle body, and remove the air cleaner cap together with the air cleaner hose.
  5. Disconnect the EVAP canister hose from the charcoal canister. Fig. 7: Remove both EVAP hoses from the charcoal canister 88271g05.gif

  6. Remove the charcoal canister from the bracket.
  7. Place a suitable container or shop towel under the fuel filter. Remove the union bolt and two gaskets, then slowly disconnect the fuel inlet hose from the fuel filter outlet.   8. Using a special wrench 09631-22020 or equivalent, disconnect the inlet pipe from the fuel filter. Remove the two bolts and the filter from the vehicle. Fig. 9: Using a special tool, disconnect the inlet pipe from the fuel filter 88271g07.gif

    To install:
  9. Install the fuel filter with the two bolts and tighten them to 43 inch lbs. (5 Nm).
  10. Using the special wrench 09631-22020 or equivalent, connect the inlet pipe to the fuel filter. Tighten to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm). Using a torque wrench, tighten with a fulcrum length of 11.81 inch (30cm). Install the fuel inlet hose to the filter outlet using new gaskets and union bolt. Tighten to 22 ft. lbs. 30 Nm).   11. Install the charcoal canister to the bracket. Connect the two EVAP hoses to the canister.
  12. Connect the air cleaner hose to the throttle body. Install the air cleaner cap together with the air cleaner hose.
  13. Attach the IAT sensor wiring.
  14. Connect the negative battery cable. Start the engine and check for leaks. Reset any various digital equipment such as radio memory and the clock if necessary.

I'm guessing there should be a tube or pipe that goes to the valve cover. Is the hole about a 1/2 inch in diameter? If so that's the fresh air intake for your "crankcase ventilation system". That hole should not be left open because, dirt and dust can can go directly into the engine and crankcase. There should be a tube, they are usually plastic.

Hi, before the pump it is a loose connection or maybe a pin hole in the pipe, check all the connections and pipes for seepage, after the pump it will be a leak, i knowit sounds the same but after the pump the fuel is under pressure. It would appear that your system drawing air rather than forcing air in. daveg
