The "service engine" light will illuminate for many reasons. Was the engine running good before the light was noticed? It could just need a tune-up (Wires/Plugs/Rotor & points). But you could have had a sensor go bad (Oxygen, EGR, etc) The best way to handle it is to read the computer error code.
Many auto parts stores (ie AutoZone, Napa, Advanced Auto, etc) will read the codes for you (for free) and advise you what you should do.
