Question about Cars & Trucks

1 Answer

I have a 98 z71 5.7 ltr. Vortec 350 . Being on a strict budget my ex-father inlaw and I put a new (reman) motor in 2 months ago ... Didn't start. Since then I've replaced the crank, and can sensors . Coil, module ,distributor fuel spider and yesterday the fuel pressure regulator. She ran perfectly! Long enough to finally seat the cylinders. Woot climbed in to deliver a Mother's Day steak and she started cutting out and dieing on me. I ran the codes and they're P740 P785 & P1860. Now ,my son helped me by getting under neath and tightening the fuel pipes back down for me. Can it be that he knocked a sensor loose while crawling around or could it be something more serious? As I didn't have any problems before the new motor.

All codes relate to the auto trans so check fluid level, change fluid if not done recently if this makes no difference then take to an autobox repair shop as could be torque converter solenoid valve and or the PCM malfuntioning

SOURCE: Starting problem

Try the idle air control valve it is located near the throttle body it has a four wire plug and has two small hoses attached to it this is a small stepper motor that controls the amount of air on start up this part will cost about $200 from a popular auto parts store.

SOURCE: 98 Dodge Dakota "pick up coil" cam position sensor repeat failure

Honestly? Cruddy parts.

I have a Dodge Stratus....97....same thing here. Unfortunately, shoddy parts, even from the dealership. I think the best thing is to keep a fresh one on hand. I know that the wiring is garbage too due to how the harness curls up to the sensor. Not much to tell you on this one.

sounds like youve really done your home work all that comes to mind now is try a cam posistion sensor this would keep your car from starting as well if that is good you can aslo try a crank sensor. you will get all of the readings that you are getting and these sensors can still be bad.

Replace starter. Car has been running fine for last 2 weeks, however today car won't start. Battery ok. What's the likely problem?

Ronald,
When you replaced the starter, I assume you did disconnect the battery. Did you clean the posts before putting your battery cable back on? I replaced my battery a couple of months ago and did not clean them and my van ran fine for several days and then one day would not start. Cleaned the posts and cable ends and everything worked fine. Just a thought. Hope this helps!

I am swaping out 1990 4.3 chhevy sport and putting i a 1995 350 chevy

The 1995 350 is a "Vortec 5.7" motor if I remember correctly. You will have to get a throttle body and intake manifold for an older 5.7 liter(early 90's?).The Vortec engines are a sequential multiport injection setup(totally different).

1998 chevy k1500 idle fast

Sounds like it could be a dirty or faulty idle air control valve.Take it off and clean it with a wire brush and a non-chlronated brake cleaner or replace it with a new one.Make sure you reset the computer after cleaning or replacing the valve.

What year motors, can I use to replace my blown 1996 305 vortec t.b.i.? I own a 1996 GMC 1500, sl, ext. cab. Does it have to be a vortec for my current computer to work properly? Will engine mounts, bell...

Untill recently GM didn't change much of anything as far as bolt paterns You could bolt up a 350 from 20 years ago to your transmission and motor mounts. But that is not really what your wanting to do. The question is do you have a "vortec" or is it TBI. The vortec motor says vortec all over it (they were pretty proud of it I guess) The earlier TBI motor, at first glace look just like the old carburetor versions until you take of the air cleaner and find a throttle body instead of a carburetor. The two are not interchangeable as to the electronics, they are way diffract.

98 sonoma 4x4 ,4.3 vortec. won't start.new battery,coil,pickupcoil,cap,rotor,wires,plugs,fuel pump,checked all fuses, and grounds.even checked pcm.

My 98 sonoma would not start if humid and about 70F. There was also no fire when acting up. Finally found a bad connection on the hall pickup sensor from the distributor. I put ox-guard on the connector pins and plugged it back in - no problems. Took about 2 years and $500 in wasted repairs to find this. Good Luck!
