First determine where the oil is coming from. Turbo seal leaks will cause oil to burn. Also check crankcase pressure regulator.
What signs are leading you to blow by?

Some blow by is expected from a diesel engine. If it has a lot of miles on it you could be right about the rings. The rings may be so gummed up with carbon that they are no longer functioning.

Could be head gasket, piston, or other nasty issue. Smoke isn't a good sign. Run a compression check, that may help indicate where the problem is.

2005 toyota corolla blowing smoke

Blowing black smoke means fuel mixture is too rich, possible choke is stuck partically closed.
Blowing white smoke especially driving off the traffic lights indicates either worn valve guides or worn piston rings. Valve guides require the head to be removed to replace valve guides.
Replacing piston rings means a major engine repair. It maybe better to get a reconditioned motor than replace worn piston rings because other worn engine parts should be replaced at the same time.

I have blue smoke coming out of the exhaust of my 1998 dodge caravan

Blue smoke is usually an indication of bad rings, which allows engine oil to be burned as you drive. The fix requires engine teardown, pulling off the heads, removing the oil pan, and removing the crankshaft, rods, and pistons. The cylinders may need to be bored, but at the least they will need cleaned up with a hone. The old rings taken off and new rings istalled. If the engine needed bored, then new pistons must be installed. Then, put it all back together.

Hope this helps you

The black smoke is blow-by you need a ring job. Oil is getting by the top ring of your pistons in one or more cylinders. Loss of power under a load is also indicative of this.
