You may need to replace the coil pack or just the insulation boot. The Boots are $8.50 each at IPD.

This engine had a problem with the ignition coil which resulted in the problem you describe, i.e., missing and rough running under load. I\'ve attached and ad for a replacement coil that also suggests that you clean and re-secure the coil ground and check or replace the Crank Position Sensor. Hope this helps.

Ignition coils I priced on eBay for V6 is $65 they would not take more than 1hour probably about 30mins to install which is $60. Is the mechanic certain it needs a new computer or can you trouble shoot backwards? I found price for ECU (computer) www.autopartsfair.com which puts max price at $516 for the part avg $199 lets give the benefit of doubt that it takes 2 hours to install and calibrate i am assuming $150 / HR. i would estimate and 25% premium on parts $1100 would be my estimate. To me the fact you could keep driving makes me think the computer is ok and the problem is mechanical. For me I would start from basics replace the spark plugs the ignition coils are not expensive significant dinner them as well. The injectors could also be the issue but see if the car is good with new sparks and coils. Then check injectors they can usually be serviced but if need replacing around $65 each probably a mechanic would charge around $100. I would ask the mechanic why he thinks it is the computer and coils first if answer not satisfactory get another mechanic to look at it.

They are usually on the sides of the engine. Each one has a connector that plugs into the coil. The Auto Zone price is about $125 per coil.

Replacing all this you surely set the alarm off. Turn the car on, don't start . let sit for ten minutes, turn off, don't remove the key. do this three times. after the third time you turn it off, if it was the security, then the car should start. Let me know And we can go fdrom there.

I also have an s type you can check online at autohausaz.com for your coil packs they are priced around $55 a piece for the 3.0 v6 and $60 for the 4.2l v8 and this company provides free ups ground service on purchases over $50 you could google and check other sites but many of them charge over $100 a piece. Hope this helps you

As you probably know, the coils are attached directly to the spark plugs, not sure of the dealer price, but autozone lists them at $29.99 each for 4cyl A4, which I imagine should be much cheaper than the dealer. Let me know what the dealer price was.
