SOURCE: Audi 80 oil pressure light
i think from memory that the oil pressure switch is at the back of the cylinder head, if its not there it will be located just above the oil filter, these switches are very cheep to buy and can be bought from any good motor factors. You are right to suspect the switch, its the first thing to eliminate before bogging your self down with more complicated and expensive problems.

The car has entered into fail safe mode. It wil not allow the engine to rev high but allows you only to get to a mechanic or to get some oil into the engine. What's the level like? Is there any trace of leakeage?

The oxygen sensor is located in the exhaust right before the catalytic converter. It is a 3-wire type sensor. You will need to use an oxygen sensor to get it out, and a handy tip is to spray it with some penetrating liquid, then let it soak for 20 minutes before removal.
