Question about 1993 Pontiac Grand Am

Engine Performance problem 1993 Pontiac Grand Am 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic Engine dies when dropped back to idle. I replaced the idle air control valve. I replaced the crank shaft position sensor. I have removed and cleaned the throttle body. It's a 2.3 L Quad-4 engine. None of that has changed or corrected the problem. I don't know where to go from here.

Clean the Mass Flow sensor. It is probably a black module with wires on the side of the throttle body. There are a few ways to do this, but I suggest buying a can of spray designed for this purpose from your local parts store (electrical spray or MAF spray).

Be careful not to break the little wire. It costs a few hundred bucks to replace.

Disconect the overdrive solenoid from the transmission. test drive replace if problem goes away. You will not have overdrive while doing this test.

Sounds like you make have a vacumn leak on one of the rubber vacumn lines that attach to the intake manifold. Check all of these lines and look for cracks, pinholes and lines that have colapsed.

HOW DO I REMOVE THE ENGINE IN A 1993 PONTIAC GRAND AM 4 CYL

Usually the whole front engine cratle is removed from the under side of these cars. Once all the electrical is disconnected, you unbolt the struts, unbolt the top motor mount anything that might hang up as your lowering the engine out from underneath the body. There are a few bolts holding cradle underneath the engine that need removed. Make sure all your brake lines are disconnected. so forth and so on. Then its just a matter of lifting the body high enough for the whole engine cradle to roll out from under it.

provided you don't have a vacuum leak, (check all hoses for tightness and cracks with engine running) it's probably your idle air control valve or sensor.

Cavalier blowing out black smoke car idles fairly well considerin

Black smoke is usually unburned fuel. P0171 reads bank 1 system too lean. There isn't one answer. You need to dig further and inspect your cars fuel system, from the pump to the injectors. Because of the mileage you may want to start off with a compression test just to see where you stand with the motor. write back if you have any other questions.

Idle problem

throttle position sensor is what I replaced on mine. Could also be a short in a wire that controls throttle. That was 6 years ago and it was $100. Took it to a shop, that's all I got.
