How do you stop the crankshaft from turning when trying to remove the harmonic balancer mount bolt on a 1999 mercury grand marquis

I was told to set the parking brake and shift it into gear. I tried that and it failed to stop it from rotating.

The quick and easy method which is done in all the shops is to use an air powered impact gun. Sometimes the electric impact guns will work.The bolt that holds the balancer on has probably got Locktite on it or something similar.If you have oxy-acetylene gear you could try warming it up some first. You could try getting a couple of friends with some rope wound around the balancer and a piece of wood to wedge it while you put pressure on the bolt. I have tried all of the above with a wide range of success.Chances are you will end up renting or borrowing an air compressor and an impact gun for half a day.good luck

SOURCE: can't remove crankshaft timing belt pulley BOLT!

You will have to brace the crankshaft somehow, either by way of the flywheel, or the pulley. The trick to getting the bolt to break is "heat". Propane will sometimes work, but it's generally not hot enough. You want to get that bolt glowing if you can, and hit it with air impact then. Be careful not to burn yourself!

The bad about these are if the flasher is bad than it's internal inside the steering wheel there is no flasher for these outside of the column except the interceptor models i have one my self and mine whent out too. I also changed the blinker bulbs because there double fillament and if one fillament goes they tend to flash really fast. This is from experience

A mechanic would use a stethoscope to listen for the source of the noise.
If it is a loose balancer, you normally remove the motor mounts and support the engine from the bottom to gain access to the bolt.
It would be advisable to take the bolt out and use some locktite on the threads.

How to change crankshaft sensor on 1999 grand price gt


To get to the sensor, the harmonic balancer pulley on the crankshaft has to be removed. The center bolt on the harmonic balancer is on very tight. To loosen without an impact wrench, remove starter motor and wedge a piece of wood against the flywheel, or use a pry bar and hold the ring gear on the flywheel rigid, while loosening the crank bolt. The engine will try to turn backward when you loosen the crank bolt, so you have to hold the flywheel rigid. Once the bolt is removed, see if you can get the harmonic balancer pulley off without a gear puller. Just try tapping it to see if it slides off, or use two screwdrivers on each side behind the pulley and see if you can start it sliding off. If it is on very tight, as many are, you will have to get hold of a harmonic balancer removal tool-a simple, inexpensive puller that bolts onto pulley and can be drawn off. You might be able to rent the tool too.
BTW, you will need to have the wheel removed from passenger side, and the inner fender cover removed to get to the crankshaft. Once the pulley is off you can unbolt the sensor and put the new one on. GM recommends using a sensor alignment tool to install, because the thin vanes on the back of the harmonic balancer pass through the sensor, and if not aligned right could damage one or the other. If you don't have the tool, put the sensor on loosely mounted, just snugged up finger tight, then test the pulley will slide through the sensor slots without touching either side of sensor. If it looks right, tighten down the sensor in place, install the harmonic balancer pulley and tighten the center crank bolt to about 105 foot pounds.
Wedge the flywheel again so the engine won't turn when tightening the crankshaft bolt.

Had my Harmonic Balancer replace now it shuts off after 10 mins of it being on


the garage may have did something to the crank position sensor that is located behind the harmonic balance. there is a ring gear there to for the timing

I need to replace crank shaft timing sensor


  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Disconnect the electrical connector at the sensor.
  3. Using a 28mm socket and pull handle, rotate the harmonic balancer until any window in the interrupter is aligned with the crank sensor.
  4. Loosen the pinch bolt on the sensor pedestal until the sensor is free to slide.
  5. Remove the pedestal to the engine mounting bolts.
  6. While manipulating the sensor within the pedestal, carefully remove the sensor and pedestal as a unit. To install:
  7. Loosen the pinch bolt on the new sensor pedestal until the sensor is free to slide.
  8. Verify that the window in the interrupter is still in the correct place.
  9. Install the sensor and pedestal as a unit while making sure that the interrupter ring is aligned within the proper slot.
  10. Install the pedestal and tighten the engine mounting bolts to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm).
3X Sensor
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the sensor harness connection to the sensor. Fig. 1: Unsecure the harness, then unfasten the bolt to remove the CKP sensor 86815102.gif

  3. Unsecure the sensor block bolt.
  4. Remove the Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor from the vehicle. Inspect the O-ring for cracks and replace if needed. To install:
  5. Install the new O-ring if needed and lubricate with engine oil.
  6. Install the sensor into the hole in the block.
  7. Install the mounting screw and tighten to 71-88 inch lbs. (8-10 Nm).
  8. Attach the sensor harness connector, then connect the negative battery cable.
Dual Crank Sensor Sections 3 and 4 of this manual also cover testing, removal and installation, and adjustment of many computer controlled components.
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the belt(s) from the crankshaft pulley.
  3. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  4. Remove the right front wheel and inner fender access cover.
  5. Remove the crankshaft harmonic balancer retaining bolt, then remove the harmonic balancer.
  6. Disconnect the sensor electrical connector.
  7. Remove the sensor and pedestal from the engine block, then separate the sensor from the pedestal. To install:
  8. Loosely install the crankshaft sensor to the pedestal.
  9. Using tool J-37089 or equivalent, position the sensor with the pedestal attached, on the crankshaft.
  10. Install the pedestal-to-block retaining bolts. Tighten to 14-28 ft. lbs. (20-40 Nm).
  11. Tighten the pedestal pinch bolt 30-35 inch lbs. (3-4 Nm).
  12. Remove tool J-37089 or equivalent.
  13. Place tool J-37089 or equivalent, on the harmonic balancer and turn. If any vane of the harmonic balancer touches the tool, replace the balancer assembly. NOTE: A clearance of 0.025 in. (0.635mm) is required on either side of the interrupter ring. Be certain to obtain the correct clearance. Failure to do so will damage the sensor. A misadjusted sensor of bent interrupter ring could cause rubbing of the sensor, resulting in potential driveability problems, such as rough idle, poor performance, or a no-start condition.
  14. Install the balancer on the crankshaft. Install the balancer retaining bolt. Tighten the retaining bolt to 200-239 ft. lbs. (270-325 Nm).
  15. Install the inner fender shield.
  16. Install the right front wheel assembly. Tighten the wheel nuts to 100 ft. lbs. (136 Nm).
  17. Lower the vehicle.
  18. Install the belt(s).
  19. Reconnect the negative battery cable.
24X Crank Sensor
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the serpentine belt from the crankshaft pulley.
  3. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  4. Remove the crankshaft harmonic balancer retaining bolt, then remove the harmonic balancer.
  5. Disconnect the sensor electrical connector.
  6. Unfasten the sensor bolts, then remove the sensor. Fig. 2: The 24X crankshaft sensor is secured by two bolts 86815103.gif
    To install:
  7. Install the crankshaft sensor to the engine with the two mounting bolts. Tighten the bolts to 8 ft. lbs. (10 Nm).
  8. Attach the electrical harness to the sensor.
  9. Using tool J-29113 or equivalent, install the harmonic balancer to the vehicle.
  10. Apply a thread sealer such as GM 1052080 or an equivalent to the threads if the crankshaft balancer bolt, then tighten the bolt to 110 ft. lbs. (150 Nm).
  11. Lower the vehicle.
  12. Install the serpentine belt.
  13. Reconnect the negative battery cable.

My mother had the oil changed in her 1992 Mercury Marquis, only 62,000 miles and the mechanic says we need to fix the crank pulley wobble? I have never heard of this, can you tell me what he is talking...


HI. This can be a potentially damaging find. The actual pulley may be separating from the crank shaft, itself.

Your crank pulley is bolted directly onto the harmonic balancer. The bolt that holds the balancer to the engine block may be loose, or the balancer, itself, may be separating. This condition could also destroy your crankshaft, if not repaired, asap. Hopefully your crank shaft is in good condition, and the culprit will turn out to be just a simple loose pulley bolt. The repair cost could catapult to a higher rate if it turns out to be a crank shaft fault.

Have this potentially damaging condition inspected, asap.

Need to replace the crankshaft position sensor


REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the serpentine drive belt from the crankshaft pulley.
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  4. Remove the right front wheel and tire assembly and the right inner fender access cover/splash shield.
  5. Using a 28mm socket, remove the crankshaft harmonic balancer retaining bolt.
  6. Remove the crankshaft balancer, using a puller if necessary.
  7. For 1992-99 vehicles, remove the CKP sensor shield. Fig. 1: If so equipped, remove the crankshaft position sensor shield 89634g95.gif

  8. Unplug the sensor electrical connector.
  9. For 1987-91 vehicles, perform the following:
    1. Remove the sensor and pedestal from the block face.
    2. Remove the sensor from the pedestal.
  10. For 1992-99 vehicles, remove the sensor from the block face. To install:
    1. For 1987-91 vehicles, perform the following:
    2. Loosely install the crankshaft sensor on the pedestal.
    3. Position the sensor, with the pedestal attached, on crankshaft sensor installation tool J 37089 or equivalent.

    7. Place the crankshaft sensor tool on the crankshaft balancer and turn. If any vane on the harmonic balancer touches the tool, replace the balancer.
  11. For 1992-99 vehicles, install the CKP sensor on the block.
    1. Install the retaining bolts and tighten to 14-28 ft. lbs. (20-40 Nm).
    2. Install the crankshaft position sensor shield.
    3. Attach the sensor electrical connector.
  12. Install the balancer on the crankshaft.
  13. Tighten the crankshaft bolt to 200-239 ft. lbs. (270-325 Nm) for 1987-91 vehicles. For 1992-99 vehicles, tighten to 110 ft. lbs. (150 Nm), plus an additional 76°rotation.
  14. Install the inner fender shield and the right tire and wheel assembly.
  15. Carefully lower the vehicle.
  16. Install the serpentine belt.
  17. Connect the negative battery cable.

Crankshaft Sensor REMOVAL & INSTALLATION 3.8L Engine On vehicles with a manual transaxles, the crankshaft position sensor is easily accessed from beneath the engine. On vehicles with automatic transaxles, the rack and pinion heat shield and the converter intermediate exhaust assembly must be removed first.
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Disconnect the electrical connector at the sensor.
  3. Using a 28mm socket and pull handle, rotate the harmonic balancer until any window in the interrupter is aligned with the crank sensor.
  4. Loosen the pinch bolt on the sensor pedestal until the sensor is free to slide.
  5. Remove the pedestal to the engine mounting bolts.
  6. While manipulating the sensor within the pedestal, carefully remove the sensor and pedestal as a unit. To install:

My pulley from the crankshaft came off, it might be a stupid question, but did it break or just come off?? 1999 Mercury Grand Marquis


Not a stupid question. If thedampener is not tightened down sufficietly., The bolt can work itself out over tine.Without the clamping effect of the bolt the hub is able or will react to the crank shaft rotation pulses.which the dampener is supposed to absorb. Enough vibration,rotation counterin stress and eventually shears the keyin the crank and the dampener hub starts slipping on the crank . The rest is a given, the more it moves the more it loosens untilit no longer holds, Then you end up ssking this question. If you have lost a dampener, Just installing a new one will more than likely be futile.. The crank is now worn down and there will not be adequate sizing for the interference fit.. If you clean up the crank, and use loctite red on the pully and crank surfaces making sure the bolt is tightened real good with loctite thread lock on the threads, you mjust might get away with it. I can't see the dmage so you make the call. Now is you chance to replace the front crank seal. Is it in the shop now?
