What is the correct oil pressure on a 1988 vw cabriolet

After half hour or so of driving the oil light flashes and I also hear a buzzer along with the oil light. Its not constant I may hit the gas and it stops, but it will come back again.
What should the VDO bar gauge read. and what causes the high oil pressure after half hour of driving

  • hectordiaz2u Jun 23, 2009

The vdo bar gauge reads from 0 to 5 and its an oil pressure gauge used on the VW Cabriolet.
I'm just confused why would the oil light go off when I rev the engine, when one would think it would have the opposite affect.

  • hectordiaz2u Jul 01, 2009

I changed oil and filter and this solved the problem
and now the oil pressure is at its proper reading
Thank you emmetmyers you where correct!!

A plunged oil filter will do this so will a bad oil reg.
try changing your oil and get a new filter
also you may have had the incorrect filter on it "some shops do this"

  • Anonymous Jun 23, 2009

0-5 psi is LOW so when you rev it it makes the pressure MORE and turns off the light
sorry for the last comment i thought you meant it was high

Well the oil pressure is high from what you say. That's an oil pump going bad, the regulator is malfunctioning. The only way to fix it is to replace it. If you mis-typed & it's low the same applies. The vod,I believe is the engine vaccuum in inches of mercury,hg. Good would be 20-25 at cruising speed. About 40mpg.

When you rev the engine it increases oil pressure, hopefully. You say it's high to begin with. So based on that, replace the pump & the pressure regulator is built in so it should be fine.

Intermitent low oil pressure problem

This vehicle as well most other Volkswagens of that era are notorious for oil sludge in the engine. Go to any Vw forum and you will see. You have to get this sludge out or otherwise it contaminates fresh oil and makes it lose its viscosity.

As far as the oil pressure, DO NOT DRIVE WITH NO OIL PRESSURE. If it is making noise from the valve train, there is no pressure. Be very careful running it, you may ruin an internal engine part. If you can idle it until the noise lightens up, then you can drive as long as there is oil pressure.

I have a 1998 VW Beetle and Im trying to locate the alarm/buzzer that comes on with the oil light. I need to unhook it. ITS DRIVING ME CRAZY! HELP!!!

First thing, check your oil pressure. Even if you check the oil level, if the oil pump is going bad then the oil pressure isn't high enough to keep the engine lubricated- that's probably why you hear the alarm. You'll end up needing to rebuild the engine if you drive too much without the proper oil pressure. If you're really sure you want to disable the alarm you'll need to remove the dash to get to the buzzer and disconnect the wires. You can also experiment with removing the fuse for the instrument cluster, but you'll lose all your dash lights too. Good luck.

How do I confirm that my oil light is not functioning when it's confirmed that the oil pressure is good?

REmove the wire from the sender unit and earth on the engine next to it. If the light dosen't come then it is probably blown or you have a fuse problem in that circuit

I just bought a 1988 VW Golf. I changed the oil and even checked it to make sure that there was enough. Well almost every single time towards the end of my trip the oil buzzer will go off. I checked the...

check to make sure the oil pressure sensore is working correctly,, you might need a new sensor.
could also be a sign that you are not getting enough oil pressure and this could be caused by a bad oil pump. but check the sensor first and see if this solves the problem.

1989 VW cabriolet oil pressure warning light on at low rpm and idle. Oil pressure gauge shows sub 1 bar at same time. Is this a sending unit problem, or an oil pump problem? Where are sending units? ...

The Oil light is a dreaded sight, especially at idle. Usually if an oil pump fails, it dies, the same with an oil pressure sender. I had the same problem with a 97 neon, at idle the oil light comes on... (192,000 miles). If the oil used at the oil change was a thinner viscosity than what was in there, that could cause it. If not, it could be bearings going bad on the motor creating a low pressure situation. I fixed it by going to a thicker viscosity, from 5w-30 to 10w-30, and in a week the light went off... this was 7 months ago. Just food for thought, hope this helps.

High oil pressure

You can't go by the gage on the dash, you need to hook up a manifold gage to get an accurate reading. Did you check the oil filter bypass valve AKA oil relief valve?
