Power steering pump making noise

My 98 Ford Taurus SE Sedan is making noises from the power steering pump. The fluid is dirty. What is the chance that having the power steering fluid 'flushed' will fix the noise......rather than having the pump replaced?

thanks! Jim

It may quiet down for a while but the damage is done so the pump will eventually need to be replaced.

Sorry. Its a Ford, and the design isn't the best one. But when it starts squealing, its on its way out. Very typical of ALL Fords. A fluid flush is just a waste of good fluid. Try to use a Ford replacement part for longer life and reliability over a 'made in china' POS part with no warranty. And make sure you bleed the system before driving it (jack front end up, slowly turn steering wheel lock to lock (left and right) 3 or 4 times, and checking the fluid for proper level.

Flush the Power Steering Fluid

Should be done with the trans every
30,000 miles

May not be the issue ,but you have to
do the following anyway :

Power Steering Fluid --30,000
Trans Fluid --- 30,000
Brake Fluid --- every 2 years
Clean MAF sensor --every year
Fuel Filter,Air Filter,Cabin Filter --every 3 years
Spark Plugs -every 3 years ,not over 60,000

Steering wheel is hard to turn...is that power steering fluid? Is there a specific kind for 2001 Zx2?

Does your car make a groaning noise when you turn the wheel? It could be a few different things. The first thing you want to do is check your power steering fluid. If it's low, top it off and see if that helped. It just takes a standard power steering fluid, nothing specific.

If the power steering fluid was low and that fixed the problem, you need to ask yourself the question - Why was the fluid low? There's probably a leak somewhere that needs to be fixed.

If the power steering fluid wasn't low, then there's a couple other things it could be. If the car makes a groaning noise when you turn the wheel, chances are that you have a bad power steering pump. If there's no noise and you just don't have any power steering at all then it could be a bad pump or a bad power steering rack.

Hopefully this helps you figure it out. Good Luck!

Grinding noise when turning steering wheel 2000 ford tarus.also sqeaking noise when driving..

The first thing to check is that there is the proper amount of power steering fluid in your power steering pump fluid reservoir. The tie rod ends may also be at fault.

2004 power steering pump whinning. Changed pump and noise is still present

Ford is notorious for having very noisy pumps. Yes even the replacement pumps. Having some noise in a ford is unfortunately normal.. but I would assume you may have dirty fluid still in the line.. Get the system flushed then see if it goes away. Good luck

P.S dirty or old power steering fluid can cause poor pressure in the power steering system hense the reason to flush the system

Weird noise when turning my wheel

Area of interest...power steering pump and power steering pump belt. Check fluid level in the pump.
Check belt tension.
One of those "fixes" should stop the weird noise.

1996 Ford Taurus just developed a power steering pump noise.

Make sure it is full of power steering fluid. Fords use generic power steering fluid you can buy at any parts store.Or you can try a power steering additive like Lucus and it may help as a last resort to replacing the pump .

Making noise when turning steering wheel but no leakage

The power steering pump that is used in your car is notorious for noise issues, it is a loud whine which gets louder as you turn the steering wheel right or left, flush the system fluid and replace the pump.
