do they ever need replacing though? I would like to change it myself, before we get winter again, so that it doesn't need to be done in the cold.

You have a lose belt. pop the hood have someone look and listen for the squeaky belt. you can replace it or rub a bar of soap on the belt. It may get worse put more bar soap on it (the part that touches the V of the pullies. if you are carefull you can do this with the engine running but if you are not comfortable with that (you can loose a finger or worse your hand if if gets caught in the belt ) you can also try a can of belt dressing from an parts store or try tightening the tenisioner pully if not sure get a book from local auto parts store. any of them are pretty good.

yes the need to be replaced look at it if you see any cracking or if it appears to be dry rotting get it replaced. also if it does break on you this will sound funny but you can use panty hose tie it arround the pullies it will last for a while to get you to a shop to get it fixed

Brakes make a whistle noise when applied and sometimes a low grown or grinding when coming to a slow stop or start.

A grinding or rumbling noise can also be symptoms of a wheel bearing or constant velocity joint in a driveshaft. A worn wheel bearing can also cause a 'whistling' sound (as can a worn CV joint).

A grinding noise with brakes is either worn pads causing metal to metal contact on the brake disk/rotor, or the brake backing plate catching on a spinning rotor ... or a loose/missing anti squeal brake shim (they stop the pads from rattling and vibrating).

However, as you say a mechanic has looked at the brakes and can't find anything wrong .. I think I would begin to suspect a wheel bearing or constant velocity joint on the driveshaft (front wheel drive cars).

My car makes a loud squealing sound when i start it

Mary,

This type of problem is best checked by a trusted mechanic. I doubt you'd hear squealing noises from the crankshaft or harmonic balancer; but it is likely to be heard from a belt tensioner pulley, water pump (or other belt-driven devices under the hood - such as the alternator, power steering pump, etc.). A loose or slipping belt can also cause this noise.

Spraying WD-40 on the source of the squeal may quiet the sound - but not solve the problem that is causing it. By simply masking the problem with WD-40 instead of fixing it - you run the risk of the squealing part failing catastrophically - probably at the least desirable place and time.

For your own safety and convenience, have this problem checked and repaired properly.

Good luck!

I have a 2003 Nissan sentra gee. 1.8 liter. I have I cold air intake and exhaust system. I want more speed from it. Not to sure where to start. I don't wanna put to much doe in it. Just want to have s

find the pulley with the failing bearings and you may get more power when you fix it. The belt squeal is low tension or wrong belt section The belt should be just above the pulley flange and if it is not then it will be running on the bottom of the pulley and that is why it is squealing.

I have a 2003 Nissan Murano, and everytime i turn the heater on now, there is an earsplitting squealing noise that happens for about 15 seconds. It started just when the car was cold, but now it will come...

alternator/air comp. belt slipping.look for loose belt, worn cracked belt and also these are known for cracking tensioner pulley mounting bracket and causing tension loss on belt.without a lift would be pain and ultimately you wouldnt really save much trying todo yourself.

My 2000 kia sephia started to have a squeal come from under the hood and it gets louder as i try to accelerate & now the car also overheats but my radiator is new. To top it off my o/d lights started...

okay the squeal is a belt under the hood one of them may be to tight or worn out. also you can try spraying belt cleaner and lubricant. you can pick it up at any autoparts store. DO NOT USE WD40!!!!!!!
and if your car is overheating with a new radiator then you may just need to replace your thermastat.

it is the backing plate for your brakes. you need to take it to the shop and make them fix and not charge you. as it is their fault that it happend.

Car is squealing and whining in front of engine. Can you help?

It sounds to me as if your serpentine belt and/or belt tensioner is bad,
I had a similar problem on my s10 and replaced belt, idler & tensioner.
All three pieces ran about $80.00. I did the work myself. Hope this helps.
