Question about 2003 Toyota Camry XLE

1 Answer

I just got a code of P0746 with a check engine light and hard shifts from the automatic transmission. I am wondering if it is worth it to just chnge the "A" solenoid instead of trouble shooting the c

It is a 4 cylinder engine, don't think that really matters here.

Transmission fluid pressure solenoid. If your scanner can read live data, view the transmission data to verify operation of solenoids. Some scanners could actually simulate or force activate solenoid operations. A product code of the transmission would help you to search for better answers.

SOURCE: 2005 Toyota Corolla with 36,000 miles Transmission now "jumps" into gears

hi,
when the check engine light comes on, your car goes into a mode where instead of everything being normal, things are forced, to try and compensate for something else being wrong. It most likely does need a new timing belt, and a complete tuneup INCLUDING plugs and wires. we have a 1984 toyota corolla and it purrs like ground rice, I suggest the tuneup to continue proper rice production.

SOURCE: 1996 Corolla Auto Transmission problem

Hi. 2005 Corolla CE. It's normal. They tend to do this when upshifting form 1st to 2nd gear. No timing chain readjustment needed.

96 Corolla. Overdrive not working properly, if not engaging after 45mph constantly. If driving on the city, is normal, but not after 45mph, when the car is trying to engage overdrive in order to save gas and preserve the trans gears. If not able to get help at the dealership, find another one and explain them the situation.

This is a known condition. And, is under warranty.

Take your vehicle to a Toyota dealership. Ask them to replace your ECU per TSB (Technical Service Bulletin) TC015-07. The new ECU has redesigned logic that rectifys your condition.

SOURCE: Toyota Camry Automatic Transmission Jerking Shift

Not likely to be the clutch pack as you dont mention slipping wich is the normal sign of overheated or worn clutch bands. Not sure with your vehicle but 2 methods that control the shift severity are engine vacuum or pump pressure inside the auto. so check balls are a possibility. They are spring loaded to open at a set pressure,or close.Could you check to see if its a vacuum controled and if so its a lot easier to fix as the vacuum control should be outside the trans.

Transmission shifts hard, at times hard to get into gear

if it is a manual transmission then broken mounts are always a good place to start looking
next is a clutch problem nor disengaging properly--again a mount problem
if it is an auto the the mount is immaterial as it will be a selector sensor problem

no vacuum modulator in this trans, have you run the codes? u may just have a shift solenoid or a trans connector problem. see method of checking codes at link below.
