Remove the serpentine belt, and then remove the tension pulley. The tension pulley is held on by one center bolt and i think it's 1/2 socket. Once the bolt is removed the tension pulley will come off the engine, to install the new one. It only fits one way since there are alignment slots for the tension pulley to the engine only fits one way. Tighten the bolt and don't forget to use a little lock tight on the threads to ensure they will not go loose do to engine vibration. Good luck and hope this helps.

The tension pulley bolts to the tension arm. You need to remove the whole arm to remove the pully from it. I would recommend replacing the whole unit as one as that is the way they normally come from the parts store. I hope this helps. The tension assembly is attached to the engine block itself and there is a notch in the block for the tension spring to go into when you put it back on. The belt obvioulsly has to be off for this to work.

No idea of how to release the tension on the serpentine belt on my1998fordwindstar3.0lt..but It feels like I'm going to snap the head off of the bolt on the tension pully. Any tips or an I missing sum

Done to many and really don't remember. Some loosen from the pulley bolt, some from a slot in the tensioner arm. I just look at them. If yours is from the pulley, push it away from the belt. If the arm from the tensioner doesn't move, it is locked up. Break it and replace the tensioner.

What are the torque specs for belt tensioner

There no real specs for the tensioner. The bolt should be tight and the unit as a whole should be squared to the engine. If it is in anyway tilted, th eunit is coming apart and will need to be replaced. One bolt holds this unit in place. It should have adequate tension to keep the belt taunt against all the pullies. If you are dealing with a constant squeel issue, locate the writing and you should be able to read it like holding a book in your hand. If it is upside down to you, reinstall. this will take care of the squeeling 9 times out of 10. The tensioners for replacement run about $50 - $75.

View of mark for timing belt.

hi from uk the cambelt/timing belt comes as a kit ie timing belt and tensioner cost £50 here in uk ? it is not too difficult diy job approx 2hours the engine must 1st be set to TDC number 1 firing then at this setting the cam cog mark is a hole drilling in the web of cog and should line up at 12 oclock upwards and using a mirror look thro drill hole and you will see a vertical notch/groove behind on font engineface this is correct mark the crank cog mark lines up with aother mark on engine front face at approx 12 30 pm oclock ? if now set you slacken tensioner bolts and push t/pully away to left from belt ? then remove belt next remove complete tensioner assy after undoing bolts then fit new tensioner push t/pully to left from belt run and lock bolt/s recheck t/marks then fit new belt from c/shaft in anticlockwise rotation when fitted release tensioner bolt and allow to tension belt push t/pully onto belt and lock up tensioner bolts20=27 Nm rotate engine manually for four turns then recheck marks ? should still aligne then re assemble torque crank bolt to =140-150 Nm A LITTLE HINT ? b4 you remove the water pump belt ? slacken thefour 10 mm headed bolts (spanner size) that secure w/pump pully to pump it will be easier to halt rotation of pully if you holt belt tight by hand this pully has to come off to remove c/belt covers same for power steer belt which is also driven from the w/pump pully the power steer pump slide adjuster has a 12 mm bolt you slacken and best done with open end spanner ? after slackening the pump mounting bolts/nuts underneath pump hope you can follow this info/tips wish you good luck from uk

My GXP Grand Prix shreded the serpentine belt the mechanic said something about the tension pully and he needs to replace the whole frame? is there a diagram for the serpentine pullies?

You mean replace the tensioner assy , thats a common problem. If it has an idler pully, replace that too. Diagrams are easy to find , even easier if you provide the year and engine size of your car.

That pulley is the tensioner pulley. It is either manual or automatic. If it is a manual tensioner, the bracket that it is attached to it should have a square hole located on it bracket somewhere. This whole will look inoculous, but will be offset from the pulley. If you have a 3/4" socket wrench, you'll notice it fits nicely into this hole.

You use this hole (and the wrench) to twist the whole bracket and apply tension while you tighten the bracket itself down.

An automatic tensioner will have a spring inside and would pretty much work by itself when a belt of the proper length is installed. Your Hanynes manual would have already alerted you to how to adjust an automatic tensioner.

I hope that helps.

BTW, the tensioner pully usually rests on the back (flat) side of the belt and has no device attached to it.

1992 2.2 serpentene belt tensioner replacement

The tensioner should have a bolt in the middle of it. But also there should be a bolt in the mibble of the pully. If you are replacing the tensioner assy. 1st remove the belt 2nd remove the bolt. the tensioner assy. will have a specific way of going on If you tighten the new one down ad it will not move it is on wrong and try again. If just replacing the pully just remove the belt take the bolt out of the old pully and install new one. Do to space constraints this can be a knuckle buster be careful. If any more questions please ask. Have a great day. PS. I recomend to everyone who does work on there vehicles to buy a chilton or haynes manual from their local auto parts store. It has detailed instructions and pictures to help. These are usualy about $20

Changing Serpentine Belt

That bolt keeps the belt tensioner on. There are two bolts on a typcial tensioner. One to keep the pully on, the other to keep the whole asembly on. Since it's a GM, you should either see a square hole, around 3/8 in or a raised slot. You can put a 3/8 braker bar in the hole and you push it to remove the tension. No need to remove any bolts. Or, there could be a slot sticking out on it, you can put a wrench on it and push it to remove tension. When there is no tension, you slip off the belt from any pully, i prefeer slipping it off a top pully for easier access, and same for instaliton. Set the new bet up the way your old one was exepct for the highest pulley, remove the tension from tensioner, slip belt back on last pully and let the tensioner do it's job. If you remove the bolt that keeps the tensioner on, it will pop off and easily hurt yourself. After the new belt is on, make sure it is on correctly. There are small ribs on the inside of the belt, if those aren't in the groves properly of all the pullies, the belt will not last as long.
