Question about 2007 Toyota 4Runner

1 Answer

My TOYOTA 4-Runner has an unusual odor that comes and goes...

The odor is almost like a dead animal. It started in the fall of 2008. The dealer did not find anything but did smell it. It occurs on and off and no specific connection to any air/fan setting. Does not seem to happen with AC on just open windows, vent. The last resort was for them to take the whole dash out, at my expense, unless defect, etc. I decided to wait to see if it would ever go away.
Anyone else ever experience this?

I've got the very same issue! '08 4 Runner purchased in Nov 08. The odor occurs for about 30 seconds upon turning on the air/heat. My guess about the rodent theory, (highly unlikely), it would have decomposed by now and would no longer emit a scent. Any other ideas?? Thank You!!

You possibly have a rodent somewhere in the system. Given your description I would say somewhere under the hood.

Odor coming out of the vents smells like a men's locker room or dead animal.

The cabin filter should be changed.
There may be an issue with your A/C as well. Leaking/mold/etc.

You'll know more once you access the filter.

Reset oil light

Toyota 4-Runner, Solara 2003-10
Turn the ignition key to the OFF position with the odometer reading shown. Turn the ignition key to the ON position while holding down the trip meter reset button. Hold down the button until the light goes off. Before the light goes off, it illuminates for 3 seconds, flashes for 2 seconds, and illuminates for 1 second. If the system fails to reset, the light will remain flashing.

Fishy, steam odor coming from AC vents

Forget the radiator tank. Your AC 'Condensate drain' hose is plugged up. This is a common problem. If you know where the hose comes out under the car you can ( carefully ) push a wire up it. If you're lucky it's plugged near the end by a mud-dauber wasp. If not, take it to your dealer and see if you can persuade the write-up guy to show you where the drain outlet is as a gesture of good faith. If they insist on charging you money, consider that when you buy your next car...
