Question about 2004 Chevrolet Cavalier

1 Answer

My Chevy Cavalier just stopped running all of a sudden

My had my 2004 Cavalier idling for a short time and then drove away and it chugged a little and stalled. It would not kick at all when I tried to start it. I have a full tank of gas. To try to see if I was getting gas I gave a shot of carburetor cleaner in the intake and it kicked over for a second. So I changed the gas filter but it did not help.I don't know if it could be a gas pump or ????

Turn the key on, while having a buddy with the gas cap off listen for the fuel pump. If the fuel pump doesnt turn on than thats the problem. Try changing the relay first, if it were me I would bypass it first just to make sure. good luck

you could just plug in the blower relay to it and see if it fixes it, or you look for the electricity in and out on the relay, use a paper clip and a pair of pliers into the fuse block wiring it direct for a short time.

Has the Fuel filter been changed? Clean the MAF the IAC and seafoam the intake. These things would be cheap to do first. Does it feel like a misfire? If so Id look into testing the coils Might need new plugs.

Rough idle timing chain? 2004 chevy cavalier

Sounds like a 2.4 Quad four engine? If so the chain has either different colored links marked links that have to be aligned with the marks on the cam gear[s] and the crank gear.A chiltons book will show you how.

Bad injectors causing the vehicle to run poorly can cause other damages to sensors etc. Buy a code reader and check the codes.

The van stalls without notice at times when ready

This sounds like a classic case of either a dirty/faulty IAC (Idle Air Control) motor or a sticking EGR valve. If you can prevent it from stalling by keeping your fot on the gas slightly and it always restarts right away and runs good when restarted, I'd suspect the IAC first. If it "chugs"when stopping and will run rough even with a little (not a lot) of gas pedal and/or it runs rough when restarted, I'd suspect the EGR.

Low idle

Here is the most common cause of surges and stalls and low idle rough idle, it is the idle speed control air-bypass valve and throttle valve (IAC for short), they get full of gunk over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls, low idle) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake.

If this only happened AFTER you drove through the water, I'd say it had to do with the water. When ignition parts get wet, they short out and lose performance. Once they heat up and dry out, they will be back to normal. If you haven't had a tune-up in a while, I suggest you get one. Ignition wires are usually the first to give you problems when they get wet. Sometimes if it's really damp outside, you can have the same issue you did when you drove through the water.
