Question about 1998 GMC Sonoma

1 Answer

What could cause periodic crank and no start?

Most of the time it starts just fine but once in a while and getting more frequent, it just cranks. no check engine light is on. I can let it sit for a few days and it might start right up and run for days and then out of the blue it goes to acting up again.

SOURCE: turns over but won't start after it sits for a day

I had a similar problem caused by humidity and a short in the distributor cap so replaced the distributor cap and rotor. Problem solved. Don't buy discount branded parts or you will have the same problem again in a few weeks. Really cheap price equals really cheap parts that will fail early.

See if the vents on your gas cap is clogged up. The gas cap could cause the fuel tank not to vent properly, causing fuel issues

Engine cranks for about 1 minute to start...once started it will start 1st time all day until a very long period has elapsed usually the next day.

It takes 20 minutes of driving to put back into your battery what charge it took to start the engine in the first place.
If you start the engine 3 times in a day then you would need an hour of driving to recharge the battery. Check your voltage on the battery the next day with a voltmeter, You need at least 12.6v.
Check for a battery trickle leak. You will have to remove each fuse in turn until you find the cause.
Cranking for a whole minute is unhealthy for the battery and there is obviously an underlying fault in the starting system. I would also check the fuel pressure at the port and get a cylinder pressure test

you meant it wont crank? , right?, no A/T car starts, until cranked. so......what is it.????????
if you learn the art if testing, you win this battle.
here they are.
NO CRANK 101: (rule 1, it must be failing to find a cause)
it not failing, nobody can fix working cars, but they will try, and charge you for doing nothing at all. your choice.
its failing....
  1. does it crank with jumper cables to running car?
  2. are all 4 ends if the battery cables clean and tight?
  3. when you hot wire the starter solenoid, keys in pocket , does it crank now?, if yes, good, if not the starter systems are failing.
  4. if yes, it cranks now, then the KEY line is dead.
ill stop here,,,,, if key line is dead, wiggle the shifter, or try neutral cranking.. at shfiter. (bingo that>?)
battery at 12.6vdc charged and rested before starting the tests.
use a cheap voltmeter.

put what parts in?, do tell , the battery would be first. no?
try a loaner battery?

if the car always cranks then say so, that is called
cranks but does not start. period.
answer the simple questions and we can take you to the cause.
my voltmeter has never lied to me yet, in 50+ years.

lets say it cranks all the time.

Lets start at the beginning.
Are you saying the engine does not crank, or does not start ?
Either way, pumping the gas pedal has no affect on anything with starting the engine.
But cranking the engine for an extended period of time could.
If the engine is cranking but not starting, the problem could be a lack of fuel. The pump relay powers the pump for 3 seconds when you turn the key switch on, then has to have oil pressure to keep powering the pump.
If the pump relay is defective, or the check valve in the pump, you may not have enough fuel pressure when you first crank the engine.
Checking fuel pressure before and after cranking the engine would answer that question.
If the engine is not cranking, then something could be wrong with the starter or the flywheel.

My car will start hard ln cold weather20d cranks for long time starts then after couple min runs fine starts fine rest of day

I would start by changing spark plugs, if you haven't changed them in a while. If it has been wet there, raining frequently, then maybe spark plug wires too. That would maybe make sense why once it warms up and drys out it will start ok. I am not sure whether Subaru has the typical fuel pump problem or not, on my vehicle that I once had I turned the key on several times to cycle the fuel pump and my car seemed to start better. If that helps, it is just telled you that you better get the fuel pump replaced. Please rate my answer so I get points for it.

1997 jeep grand cherokee cranks long time before starting

generally your problem can be traced to a faulty anti-drainback valve in the fuel pump. After sitting for an extended time fuel must be re-filled and pressurized before engine will start. Second primary cause is a leaking fuel injector which does the exact same thing from the other end of the system but, this is also accompanied by a puff of smoke after starting.
Other causes can be low comrression from engine wear, or, a weak ignition coil but these are far less common.
