Question about Cars & Trucks

1 Answer

98 Chevy cavalier, replaced starter 4 months ago and I'm pretty sure there is a short or loose wire because when you turn the key it sometimes won't make a sound, no clicking like the battery is dead, no grinding like the starter is going, and itll do that like 3 times then the 4th time itll just start. But then there are times when you turn the key and it makes that awful grinding sound. Someone said to take the battery cables off then back on and re-tighten the cables. Could this work??

Probably not your battery connections. Always worth a try though. But no need to remove them, just try and twist the connection on the battery terminal. If the wires aren't permanently affixed to the connector, (ie wires bolt to the connector, and connector bolts to the batter)try to move the wires leading into them. If any of the wires move or the connector twists then you need to tighten them. However it is most likely the solenoid in the starter that makes the gear pop out to connect with the fly wheel. If it isn't coming out all the way that's when you hear the gears not properly meshing and grinding against the fly wheel. Take out the starter and bring it with you to the parts store. Not only will Autozone, O'rielys and other big name stores be able to test it, but will ensure you get the correct part if you need a new one. There are also shops that can repair your old starter for a fraction of the cost of a new one, and can usually have it done in an hour or two.

I have a 2004 chevy cavalier and it won't start. Just keeps clicking and won't turn over. I need some help please. Thanks

use test light, connect clip on grnd. , touch tip on the starter wire while turning key , if it lights starter is faulty , no light, solenoid is faulty, if it lights and indicates starter is cause you can try to gently tap starter with plastic handle of screwdriver if tapping gets it moving then brushes in starter are dirty or near worn out hope this helps

try locking your car with the key and unlocking it with the key, leave it for 30 second or so between the locking and unlocking , the car thinks some one has tampered with it

98 chevy cavalier turns over but won't start

i know industry jargon can be confusing, but lets try this. if it turns over but won't start, it could be your ''ignition module'' that sits on top of the vave cover on the motor or it might be the fuel pump or filter. make sure when you crank the engine that the key is all the way turned or it may not always make a proper contact to activate the ignition module. iv'e seen this before & had to change the ignition switch & all worked ok after that. i would need to know engine lt size to give you more details on the matter. please get back to me.

My 2001 Chevy Cavalier will not start. I tried changing the starter thinking that was the problem but it still won't start after that. I turn the car on and the battery is working lights come on and radio,...

Same issue I'm having. I isolated it down to the wires that connect to the starter. The wires that come off the relay to the starter seem to have a short. If I "Jiggle the wires while having someone turn the key it will start.

You know the 97 to 04 Malibu is noted for intake manifold leaking antifreeze into the engine. A little antifreeze in a cylinder can keep the piston from moving in compression stroke. Take a look at the spark plugs, see if any of them have antifreeze on them and maybe the starter will spin the crank with the plugs out.
