Question about 1999 Dodge Ram
Shifts gears fine, but sometimes lockup kicks on & off when trying to maintain highway speed. there seems to be no pattern, except that it happens more frequently in warmer weather
If your talking about the transmission OD; maybe it could be the vacuum system. I would have no way of knowing unless I could verify the problem in person. My advice to you would be this; take the truck to a good independent shop or Dodge Dealership and pay $50-80 and have them hook a scan tool up to it. I wouldn't use your local parts store for it, because their OBD II scanners can't give you the deep diagnostic scan you need. Then you will know the problem area (s) and can fix it yourself. You don't want to spend unnecessary money trying to fix something that is not the root cause of the problem.

Sounds like your lock up converter is kicking on and off. a shift kit could help. just take it to your transmission shop and be done with it.

SOURCE: engine shut down while driving
This will need a good repair shop , not necessarily a dealer. Find one recommended by friends that can do computer/electrical work. The "no bus" means the cars computer network is losing comminication between itself. This is not a code , but you might have code(s) stored in the computer system.A repair shop can scan for any stored codes to start the diagnosis. The problem could be in the PCM (engine computer) or even the Theft deterent system. Sounds more like theft deterent because of the no crank situation. If you have the spare ignition key try it & see if anything changes.

check your fuel pressure, should be 40lbs+ at idle. If you dont know how to do this, have a friend or a shop check it for you. I had same problem, no power at all would barely run ect,, turned out to be fuel pump.
