Question about 1999 Dodge Ram

What could be causing lock up to kick on & off while driving down the highway?

Shifts gears fine, but sometimes lockup kicks on & off when trying to maintain highway speed. there seems to be no pattern, except that it happens more frequently in warmer weather

You need to get a transmission repair or overhaul done.

Check your DTC's with a scan tool first. It could be something simple as a vacuum leak or a bad module. I would spend $3 or 4 thousand dollars on a transmission if I didn't have to.

If your talking about the transmission OD; maybe it could be the vacuum system. I would have no way of knowing unless I could verify the problem in person. My advice to you would be this; take the truck to a good independent shop or Dodge Dealership and pay $50-80 and have them hook a scan tool up to it. I wouldn't use your local parts store for it, because their OBD II scanners can't give you the deep diagnostic scan you need. Then you will know the problem area (s) and can fix it yourself. You don't want to spend unnecessary money trying to fix something that is not the root cause of the problem.

jimfuller 7's post is also correct, it could be the lock up converter, but I don't want tell you to fix something that is not the root cause.

Sounds like your lock up converter is kicking on and off. a shift kit could help. just take it to your transmission shop and be done with it.

SOURCE: engine shut down while driving

This will need a good repair shop , not necessarily a dealer. Find one recommended by friends that can do computer/electrical work. The "no bus" means the cars computer network is losing comminication between itself. This is not a code , but you might have code(s) stored in the computer system.A repair shop can scan for any stored codes to start the diagnosis. The problem could be in the PCM (engine computer) or even the Theft deterent system. Sounds more like theft deterent because of the no crank situation. If you have the spare ignition key try it & see if anything changes.

check your fuel pressure, should be 40lbs+ at idle. If you dont know how to do this, have a friend or a shop check it for you. I had same problem, no power at all would barely run ect,, turned out to be fuel pump.

I had trouble with what seemed like a transmission on my ford van. Was told by a master mechanic to disconnect the NEGATIVE battery cable for 5 minutes to reset computer. I did this, it worked & never had another problem with it. Maybe it will work in your situation. Doesn't cost anything to try!:)

Sounds like you have a problem in the Overdrive sensor or the lockup in the converter. You should see if a scanner will identify this problem. Ask at the autoparts store about "What they show for an Overdrive switch or Servo?". Autozone, Advance, and Oreillys do free scans.

Check your transmission fluid as the trans works hard in top gear with pressure directly driving the tallest gear in the trans. Low fluid levels could be causing the converter to kick out of Lockup.

I have a 1999 Ford Explorer Sport. It sometimes stalls when coming to a stop. Ussually after driving several miles. It will restart in park and idle fine. But as soon as I shift it into drive it will die....

Go to a local transmission shop, an independant if possible, and ask them to test drive your vehicle. This is a more common problem with GM vehicles, but it sounds as though your trans may not be coming out of lockup, causing a situation very similar to pulling up to a stop with a manual trans , and not depressing the clutch. Lockup is designed to kick in at cruise speeds, and remove all slippage from an auto trans, thereby improving milage. Sometimes the trans will not unlock. The good news is that many times, it's not a incredibly expensive repair. Good luck!

The lockup switch locks the converter when driving at highway speeds. You can try replacing it, as an attempt at a cheap fix, but it sounds like your transmission is getting weak. There are different clutches and bands in your transmission for different gears, which do wear out over time.

Your good problem description has help alot - your vehicle has exhibited the classic symptoms of a failure of ther kick-down linkage in transmission - the vehicle gets up to highway speed fine, then as the transmission tries to kick down from 2nd gear to 1st, the kick-down linkage is too loose and fails to drop tranny into 1st gear, causing engine to stumble/stall. Fix: adjust the transmission kick-down linkage. DIY cost: $0

VW golf1citi 1.4i kick out gear no.5 when I drive fast .why?

4 to 5th gear synchronizer may be defective however considering the car is only a couple years old try bringing it to a transmission shop and ask them to check and readjust the shift linkage, if there is no adjustment there may just be a worn out or defective plastic bushing, some of these transmissions have internal shift rods and bushings that can wear prematurely. This is a job for a transmission shop the car may still be under warranty bring it to the dealer first to determine if it is under warranty then you won't have to pay as much if anything at all.

most likely the shift tube bushings are bad- you may have also lost a few screws in the shift tube or they could just be loose. you have to pull the steernig column down to inspect/repair it.
