Lost Ignition key--how do I get it out of park so I can load car??

Best option: Dealer or Locksmith should be able to make you another key, be about $250+ though (chip key), "valet" key will work, but can't start car. But, you could also locate transfer bar from ignition to shifter lock, should be on steering column. Other option, punch ignition out, extreme, but "loading" car to junk? Any Tow truck it does not matter if in park or not, they'll just hook it up and drag it to load.

Possibly crawl under car and dissconnect the shifter and manually move the selector on the trans out of Park Position. Normally the locking feature is in the steering column.. which you can also take apart to release this feature.

If you remove the fuse for the flashers, the key will come out. I keep the fuse handy in case I need to use the flashers and I'll just plug it back in!

When you experience this problem, check to see if your brake lights are coming on. It could be as simple as a brake light switch malfunction. If the brake lights are functioning as the problem is occurring then you could for example have a problem with the shift interlock solenoid.

2001 MAzda MPV- Key was stuck in ignition. Would not turn all the way back to remove. I pulled the fuse for the Hazards and WHOLA!! Key turned back and could be removed.! Just to test the problem I put the key back in , started up , pulled up and back a few feet, turned the steering wheel and parked. Key was stuck again. I pulled the fuse and again ... WHOLA! key was released. Now what I need to do is fix the problem or I have to pull a fuse every time I stop the car - ANY ADVICE??

What year is it ? Does yours have floor mounted gear shifter on the console ?

If the vehicle is equipped with a floor mounted console gear shifter, it has a ignition lock cylinder control actuator system in the steering column. The ignition lock cylinder control actuator's purpose is to prevent the ignition key from being turned to the OFF position when the transmission is in gear and the vehicle may still be moving. The column ignition lock system consists of a ignition lock cylinder control actuator , and a Park position switch that is located in the automatic transmission (A/T) shift lock control switch. The ignition lock cylinder control actuator contains a pin that is spring loaded out to mechanically prevent the ignition key cylinder from being turned to the Lock position when vehicle transmission is not in the Park position. If vehicle power is lost, and/or the transmission is not in the Park position the operator will not be able to turn the ignition key to the Lock position and will not be able to remove the ignition key from the column.

How do I get key out of ignition or start car?


You have to watch that now ,even on a 2006 vehicle . With the electronics an the number of control modules , every system has an electronic control module - a computer . When they lose power strange thing's happen .Sometime the only thing that will get the vehicle up an running again is a trip to the dealer . Battery Disconnect or Replacement Problems There are only a couple of thing's you could check an only if you know how the stating system works .It depends on what model LH2 or LY7 . You have to look in the under hood fuse / relay box an see if there is a STARTER relay . The starter relay is energized by the ECU - engine computer, there by cranking the engine over . Circuit Description
Moving the ignition switch to the CRANK position sends a 12 V signal to the ECM Ignition Crank Sense. The ECM verifies that the transmission is in the PARK or NEUTRAL position. The ECM then grounds the control circuit of the STARTER relay. When the STARTER relay is energized it allows voltage to the starter solenoid S terminal.
The problem of not getting your key out of the ignition probably has to do with the

The linear shift assembly cable contains a pin that is spring loaded to mechanically prevent the ignition key cylinder from being turned to the lock position when the vehicle transmission is not in the PARK position. If vehicle power is lost, and/or the transmission is not in the PARK position the operator will not be able to turn the ignition key to the lock position and will not be able to remove the ignition key from the column.
Given the amount of electronics on your vehicle ,without hooking up a factory grade scan tool to see which modules are still communicating it would be impossible for me or anyone else to give you a diagnostic direction. I have had vehicles like this come to the shop after the owner tried thing's, an it cost them a lot more then it would have if they just had it towed to the shop .You have no idea about the complexity of you vehicle .

The ignition lock cylinder control actuator system consists of the BCM, the lock cylinder relay, and the ignition lock cylinder control actuator. The ignition lock cylinder control actuator contains a pin that is spring loaded out to mechanically prevent the ignition key cylinder from being turned to the lock position when vehicle speed is above 5 mph for 15 seconds and the transmission is not in the Park position. If vehicle power is lost, and/or the transmission is not in the Park position the operator will not be able to turn the ignition key to the lock position and will not be able to remove the ignition key from the column. For situations where the vehicle must be towed, the system can be overridden by pressing a release button that is reached through an access hole located on the under side of the steering column. First, remove the black plug covering the hole.

Your best bet is to take it to a ASE certified repair shop or the dealer ! The fix involves taking the steering column apart an or the floor shifter assembly ! Also electrical test to determine what is the problem !

If vehicle power is lost, and/or the transmission is not in the Park position the operator will not be able to turn the ignition key to the lock position and will not be able to remove the ignition key from the column. GM has had some problems with this , If you have the console shifter there is a micro switch that when put into park a linkage pushes on this micro switch closing the circuit to ignition lock cylinder control actuator allowing you to remove your key ! These linkages fall out causing this problem ,an have electrical wiring problems as well ! I fixed a 2006 Chevy cobalt that had this same problem by getting a used shifter assembly at the auto salvage year ! cost $20.00 . There mite be a access hole under the bottom of the steering column with a release button up inside !

bad battery and if i don't drive the car couple of days then it goes dead ??? It's not the battery , you have a parasitic draw on the electrical system , that is what is draining the battery . Could be the instrument cluster .Watch this video . What's giving out 13 volts or when ? With the engine running hooking a volt meter to the battery the voltage should be 13 - 14 volts , depending on the load on the electrical system.

Ignition switch


If the ignition is stuck in the ON position but wont trun off or to the start position the ignition will need to be removed repaired or replaced. LOCKED OUT LOST KEYS Vonfrankln@aol.com
