Question about 1986 Subaru XT
I have a 1986 subaru xt turbo i recently purchased. It has problems starting. It helps when i wiggle one of the fuel injectors. I can also hear the fuel pressure regulator "hissing" on and off while i do this. I try to start it when the hissing stops which seems to work. After starting it will die immediatly unless i give it gas for a long period, and then it will idle hunt or stay perfectly normal!
Previous owners seemed to think water had corroded the wires under passenger seat which was making it so the car car wouldn't start. Said whenever it rained car had problems ( I live in SEATTLE). Car had a lot of moisture inside, they did take out the passenger seat and mess with the wires when i bought it as well as wiggle the fuel injectors to get it started. They cleaned and or replaced sensors as well as new spark plug wires and battery.
Car runs great, but has a issue starting when it has been sitting for a few hours. The fuels injecton hoses do seem to be hard and kinked and fuel pressure regulator seems to be trying to compensate for loss of fuel pressure. I thought about replaceing o-rings and hoses for fuel injectors, but not sure as this is a "new" vehicle for me

I had the same symptoms. I had to count the correct number of teeth from the crankshaft pulley to the cam pulley marks.It is a different number of teeth to each pulley.It turns out that I was off by one or two teeth on one cam.

SOURCE: Cold Start Idle Issue
Problem might be the air control valve, it's located at the right side rear of intake manifold and has a hose going to the air intake duct from the air cleaner, as a test you might try pinching off that hose when the idle is a problem.
