Question about 1996 Ford Contour

1 Answer

My rare break lights won't switch off when I turn the car off. The garage already charged me over a $100 to reset the electrical system which worked fine, but now (1 month later) it's doing it again. I can't afford to get the break light switch replaced; so I'm wondering how I can reset the electrical system? A friend says you just have to disconnect the battery for an hour? Is that right?

The brake light switch is inexpensive and easy to change. It might not even need replacing, just adjusting. Don'y disconnect your battery. The brake switch is ounder the dash where the brake arm can actuate it,

If you do find a need to disconnect your battery, turn every thing off. Especially your radio.

Its cold battery is charged dash lights come on and all bells and whistles are going off but no turn over of the engine

Possible starter problem or power supply to it. You can try tapping on the starter with a blunt object ( tire iron etc ) while holding the key in the crank position. If the vehicle starts, the starter will need replacement

Have a 2005 Pontiac bonneville GXP..husband was driving it to work one morning shortly after getting the car back from garage for a motor replacement and the car just shut off..everything locked up and...

To clarify, the anti-theft system will not kill the engine once it is running. The check gauges warning would be expected if the key switch was on and the engine was not running. No oil pressure was the most likely cause for the warning light.
The anti-theft would prevent the engine from cranking, but since the engine died I would expect to find something mechanical or electrical with the engine. Especially since you just had it replaced.
I would have the car towed to another shop and get it checked out. You may need documentation for a future lawsuit against the previous shop. If you work on it yourself its your word against theirs.
I hope you have a written warranty from the shop that installed the engine.

1997 Lincoln Continentalhorn won't stop honking

First, Have your Battery tested. The Alarm systems in Ford made Products are very sensitive to Voltage. There are 3 systems in the car which interrupt power, the Alarm system (horn honking) and the Battery saver and finally the starter interlock system.

The Alarm system will do several things to disable the car from starting. It will reduce the voltage to the starter to prevent the engine from turning over. Some will even kill the ignition system so that if the starter is jumped, the car still won't start.

The Battery saver will disconnect any system to prevent discharge below a minimum threshold. Unfortunately, when the Alternator is working extra hard to charge a really bad battery: it will disconnect the charging circuit because it reads the Draw going to the Alternator to produce the power as a parasitic drain. Even at 70mph I have seen the charging disconnected and the vehicle coast to a stop when the electric runs out.

The last system worth mentioning is the Starter interlock. Under the dash and at the top of the Brake pedal lever is a switch. When you press the brake pedal, the switch allows the starter to crank provided the shifter is not in D or R. Drivers feet routinely hit this switch and either move it or break it. When it breaks it can short and drain the battery.

As you mentioned a Random problem, the Brake switch can shake to create a random problem if it is loose or broken. Your rear brake lights can be affected.

With the horn honking, at least part of your problem is the Alarm system. You can have a bad ignition switch too, which reads the keychip to disable the alarm. Your keychip may be bad and setting off the Alarm.

I had a new Lincoln myself which set off the Alarm randomly. I actually slept inside the car one night so I could turn off the alarm in the Apartment complex parking lot. Did'nt know if it would start again if the battery was disconnected and then reconnected. The Battery was shorted with less than 1000 miles on the car. It was a factory defective battery less than 3 months old.

But your car has many years and miles on it so it was worth mentioning the wear items. I hope my solution is helpful.

How do you reset air ride suspension in lincoln mark 7

Putting on a car lift without turning off air ride won't affect the system, to reset the air ride system requires a code scanner and plug into port, try calling some auto stores to see if they can do this or have a cheap unit to reset, or take back to garage and fight with them to reset, or go to different garage.

Rear brake lights not working

first check your fueses, if thats not it on the slinder part of the arm behind the dash "the break" arm. There is a toggel switch when you push the break the button will release causing the break lights to come on when you let off the breaks it will engage the toggle switch and turn off the break lights....if the toggle switch goes out they wont work also have some one stand behind the car and wiggle the wires of the toggle switch see if it has a bad connection before you replace the switch could be just corresion or the wires may have came loose..

When i turn the headlights on in my 89' honda civic hatch back, the idle slows. i tried out a little research and got something about a dashpot but that was on a miata, so uh why would it do that? and...

Firstly, turning on the headlamps applies an electrical load onto the battery and charging system.
The charging system will sense the load and increase it's output to compensate..
This compensation is why the idle RPM drops.
The alternator is driven by the engine so when the alternator has to work harder, the engine has to work harder too..
Loss of break lamps usually means a blown fuse so check all the fuses.
Check the lamp switch too..
You might even find the lamp check relay has developed a fault..
But, I would suspect a fuse or switch before anything else..

A major short. I wouldn't use the car. Especially if you smelled a burning smell. because your car can catch fire. This is very rare to happen to a car, but take it to an electrical system repair garage.
