I woud put my 96 dodge in 4H or 4L but not engage. The 4wd light in the instrument panel woul not came on, need ideas, thanks.

Might try checking the vacuum actuator located on the front drive axle, I believe it is on the right side top of the axle. It has vacuum lines to it that engages a fork to the axle and locks it up, also this is where the 4x4 indicator lite is located at.

4x4 front end not locking in. front drive shaft is turning but the axels are not turning.

1.are the vacuum lines rusted?

2. there are two nipple like metal tubes that have vacuum lines that go to them(front of cross member) see if one had popped off,

3. there is a controller that controls this,, maybe the problem.

4.) i have plow trucks, they get stuffed with snow, and pop off. or rust out.
5. you have a busted hub.. and $$$ to replace.

front axle turns, floats, till you engage the air operated gears, to 4x4.

I have a 1999 dodge ram 1500 with automatic hubs (vaccume assist) my front hubs wont lock in so i cant use my 4x4 and i checked the vaccume lines and everything seems fine there. any ideas?

the vacumn motors are usually the bad part on those. remove it from the axle and then put it in 4x4 and see if it actuats or not.

4 wheel drive engages but hubs are not locking in

chances are that your one of your auto locks have when out on you you can replace them with the manual locking type if you dont mind getting out and locking the hubs in. and a plus to manual locks is that they are much much stronger

No 4wd in a 1998 dodge ram 2500 w/360

check behind the right side of the front axle and look for 2 vacuum lines to see if they are still connected. also check on driver side just infront of the transfer case and check the vacuum lines to see if they are still connected. usually the problem is the vacuum lines have become caught on something and disconnected themselves.

Sounds like the front axle electric actuator is bad. these are mounted on the front differential housing. they are known to go bad.
