Question about GMC Envoy

How expensive will replacing the sending unit be. earlier i was told by a sales assistant that the sending unit was not sold separately from the fuel pump. i will have to purchase a fuel pump in order to get the sending unit

I looked up the price for a 2002 Envoy at Autozone, and it is about $350 for the assembly. That's the only way to get it.

This is true although you may have luck getting a used one one from your local salvage yard

Fuel guage is not working properly


This is a very common problem and there is a simple fix. Drop the fuel tank and replace the fuel tank fuel level sending unit. The sending unit is not sold separately from the fuel pump but as one assembly called the fuel pump module. Parts cost about $150.00 and 3 hours labor.

Fuel gauge non Digital car does check system then while sitting it goes from full tank to empty and no reading's in between.


This problem is caused by a defective fuel gauge level sending unit, the sending unit is located inside the fuel tank and is part of the fuel pump assembly (known as the fuel pump module) and not sold separate from the fuel pump. To replace the fuel pump module you must remove the fuel tank from the car.

How do i fix an erattic fuel guage


This problem is caused by a defective fuel gauge sending unit. The fuel gauge sending unit is located inside the fuel tank, the fuel tank must be dropped out of the car to replace it, this is about a 3 hour job and about $200.00 for an aftermarket pump/sending unit module, and $300.00+ for the AC Delco OEM fuel pump module which contains the sending unit, the two are not sold separately. Here is the part number of the one I recommend.

1999 Chevy Cavalier fuel gauge doesn't regulate the amount of gas properly. What causes this?

This problem is caused by a defective fuel gage sending unit, the sending unit is located inside the fuel tank and is part of the fuel pump module but is sold separately in a kit from ACDelco, to replace the fuel gage sending unit requires the fuel tank be removed from the car. Toyota 4 runner gas gauge is stuck on full.


The solution to your problem most likely is the fuel gauge sending unit which is located on the fuel pump in the tank. SOMETIMES, the fuel pump and gauge are sold separately, but chances are, you may have to replace the whole assembly. Which is actually good measure, considering that you'll have the tank removed, anyway.

Gas gauge goes crazy . it goes up down stays in one spot then will move to empty then it goes back up . thought i had a half tank really had 3 gallons left


the fuel sending unit is bad and the bad thing is you have to remove the tank to get to it. the unit built in with the pump so it's kind a expensive

u will need to drop the fuel tank and replace the fuel pump module which contains the gas gauge sending unit, it is not sold separately.

Sending unit for the fuel gauge is rarely available these days alone. Most require purchase as a unit (fuel pump and sending unit combo). It has become increasingly difficult to get around this.

To save the most money you can purchase the part yourself. You'll have to find a repair shop that allows you to supply your own parts. Some won't allow it as it cuts into the profit (usually claiming no gurantee of work if they don't supply the part). I know this being a technician in dealerships anda private shop owner for many years.

Compare prices between multiple part suppliers in your area (such as NAPA, Autozone, O'Rilley, Advance Auto, etc.). You can call around or check their prices online. Be sure to compare warranties.

Ask each prospective garage 1) shop hourly rate, and 2) flat rate for the job on your particular vehicle. Each and every job on a vehicle will be listed in the flat rate manual, broken into 1/10th hour increments with adjustemnts for special equipment, such as engine, power steering, air conditioning, etc. Multiply the shop rate x flat rate for your job. Compare this between shops. There will be a slight difference in the flat rate (time allowed) amount depending on if the shop uses a flat rate manual produced by Mitchell's, Motor's, or Chilton's (usually one of these three). Of course a lot of these have now gone to a computerized system rather than books, but the end result is the same - just faster & more convenient.

If your estimates vary quite a lot in time charged then something's wrong! While rates vary between these books it is very little.

This can all require a lot of work on your part. My suggestion is to find a local independent shop with reasonable rates that friends / co-workers recommend. Do NOT take it to a dealer. I worked for them too many years to recommend that!

Turns over but won't start


I'll tell ya what a diesel mechanic told me..."fuel injector pump". It seems that the new low sulfur diesel being sold now wears the seals out on the older pumps. I changed the fuel sending unit and that seemed to help a little, but now while driving it will shut down, and it's hard to start. Going to have the job done now. Part is very expensive! Hope this helps.

  1. Properly drain the fuel tank, then disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. If not done already, raise and support the rear of the truck safely using jackstands.
  3. If equipped on late-model vehicles, loosen and remove the tank plastic shield.
  4. Loosen the retaining clamp and disconnect the tank filler hose from the tank neck.
If fuel and vapor hoses or pump/sending unit wiring can be accessed at this time, they may be tagged and disconnected. If not, wait for the retaining straps to be loosened and lower the tank slightly for access.
  1. Tag and disconnect and accessible wiring or hoses from the top of the fuel tank.
  2. Have and assistant support the fuel tank, then remove the fuel tank-to-vehicle straps and, if equipped, the isolation strips. If no assistant is available, position a floor jack to support the tank while the straps are removed.
  3. Lower the tank slightly, then remove the sending unit or sending unit/pump wires, hoses and ground strap. Be sure to label all connections to ease installation.
  4. Carefully lower the fuel tank from the vehicle and store in a safe place.
To install:
  1. Raise the tank partially into position in the vehicle. If you are working without an assistant, you may wish to loosely install one of the retaining straps and use a floor jack to support the tank at an angle so there is access to the sending unit or sending unit/pump assembly (as applicable).
  2. Connect the fuel/vapor hoses and wiring to the top of the fuel tank, as tagged during removal.
  3. Carefully raise the fuel tank so it is fully into position and loosely secure the retaining straps. Make sure the wires and hoses are not pinched or damaged when raising the tank. Also, be sure that the isolation strips (if used) are positioned between the retaining straps and the fuel tank.
  4. It may be easier to connect the fuel filler hose to the tank neck at this time. If desired, connect the hose and secure the clamp.
  5. Tighten the fuel tank retaining strap fasteners to specification. Tighten the strap nuts to 33 ft. lbs. (45 Nm).
  6. If not done earlier, connect the tank filler hose to the tank neck and secure using the clamp.
  7. If equipped, install and secure the tank plastic shield.
  8. Remove the jackstands and carefully lower the rear of the truck.
  9. Refill the fuel tank and install the filler cap, then check for leaks.
  10. Connect the negative battery cable.
Equipped With Shield Package
  1. Properly drain the fuel tank, then disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Raise and support the rear of the truck safely using jackstands.
  3. Remove the shield forward support and bracket.
  4. While supporting the shield and tank assembly with the help of both an assistant and a floor jack, remove the remaining bolts holding the assembly to the frame, then lower it sufficiently for access to the hoses and wires.
  5. Tag and disengage the hoses and wires from the sending unit assembly.
  6. Carefully lower the fuel tank and shield from the vehicle, then if necessary for service or replacement, separate the tank from the shield.
To install:
  1. If separated, install the tank to the shield.
  2. Carefully raise the tank and shield assembly partially into position with the help of an assistant and a floor jack.
  3. Connect the wiring and hoses to the sending unit assembly, as tagged during removal.
  4. Raise the tank and shield assembly fully into position, then secure to the frame using the lower retaining bolts.
  5. Install the shield forward support bracket.
  6. Remove the jackstands and carefully lower the rear of the truck.
  7. Refill the fuel tank and install the filler cap, then check for leaks.
  8. Connect the negative battery cable.
