Question about 2001 Toyota Camry

Open Question

Will the balance shaft go bad is the car sits for a period of time?

Why would I need a new balance shaft for my 2000 Toyota camry after the timing belt was changed?

SOURCE: need marks for timimg belt

On the crankshaft gear there is a VERY small dimple that aligns with a mark on the motor. The mark on the motor (a small triangle) is at roughly 11 o'clock. After you line these timing marks up look at the camshaft gear and you will see that on one of the spokes there is a hole. You need to use a mirror to line this hole up with the dimple on the cover that is behind the camshaft gear. (It is at roughly 1 o'clock) If this hole is 180 degrees from where it should be you need to rotate the motor 1 more revolution at the crankshaft and it should now be lined up, or close. Once lined up I like to take a silver (metallic) Sharpie and make my own mark on the camshaft gear and on the backing plate that is behind it. You can make this mark where ever it is convenient for you. As long as you know where your marks line up, that is all that matters. This way I don't have to use the mirror as often.

  • Step 5 Once you have your timing marks aligned you need to locate the tensioner. The tensioner obviously keeps the appropriate amount of tension on the timing belt.

SOURCE: Toyota Camry idles then dies

It is NORMAL for the engine computer to have to "Relearn" how to idle the engine after a battery replacement. This should only be temporary and will go away after a few trips.

If it does not go away, or if the Check Engine light is coming on, it will require diagnosis to determine the cause. Nobody can tell you if the problem is related to your recent work until the cause of the problem is located.

Poor idling and stalling on deceleration can be caused by anything from a bad Idle Speed Control motor (ISC)
to low fuel pressure (Clogged fuel filter, bad fuel pump) to a bad connection in the A/C clutch sensing circuit. (Kicks the idle up when the A/C compressor is running)

Just make sure the timing belt is on properlyy, lining up the cam and crank in proper position to each other. The engine willstart when fully assembled because the electrical has not be altered. If it has a crank position sensor , be sure to put it back on after cleaning it and the connector.

SOURCE: 92 toyota camry timing belt not turning car quit

Hello tim42220: y name is Roger and I will help. If the timing belt does not turn when you crank the engine the belt is bad. The belt has a habit of striping the teeth of a the crankshaft gear. This engine shows to be a non-interference engine. That means if the belt breaks the valves should not bend. This is something you should be able to do if you are mechanically inclined. Main thing is to be sure all timing marks are right. I would strongly recommend replacing the water pump at the same time. The water pump is turned by the timing belt. Should the water pump go bad it will also damage the timing belt. They do make a timing belt kit that includes the belt and all new timing belt idler pulleys. You will need to reload the belt tension-er. This is the worst part as it is hard to reset the plunger. Easier to by a new one but they are not cheap. If you look at the new belt you should see two solid stripe markings and one stripe that is a dotted line.I would also replace the camshaft seals as they are the reason for the oil leaking onto the timing belt. When installed correctly the marks align with the timing marks on the engines cam and crankshaft. Enclosed is a picture of the timing marks.Should you need further help please just ask. Please rate your answer. This way I know it helped. Thank You for using Fix Ya. Roger6f56668.jpg

At what mileage do you replace your timing belt on a 2007 Toyota Camry? When you replace this do you replace anything else at the same time to prevent fixing it more than once?

    Replacement is at 60k.
    Replace the following items:
Water pump, thermostat and gasket, all radiator and heater hoses, camshaft seal, crankshaft seal, oil pump sprocket seal( Right under sprocket) timing belt, two tensioners, spring(optional check its length) and valve cover gasket.
Depending on last tune up good time for wires and plugs and fuel filter.
getting TDC is easy on this bird . Hint: once you gotTDC off crank and Cam (little check hole on Cam sprocket must line up with indentation on face of Cam seal holder) Paint it white for easy installiation later.
Hint: remove harmonic balancer with a steering wheel puller use same puller for crank shaft sprocket.
Puller has two bolts that screw into both items and one center screw in type anvil . Don't even attempt to remove these with a rubber mallet or pry bar. These pulleys sit on two seperate woodruff keys. You'll be there forever. Don't forget to remove the front engine mount and place a block of wood on jack TOO LIGHTLY LIFT WEIGHT OF ENGONE OFF OF BOLTS SO YOU CAN UNSCREW THEM. Two pumps of the jack should do it.Double check all new items with old ones MAKE SURE THEY ARE IDENTICAL ESPECIALLY TENSIONERS.
PRIOR TO REMOVING TIMING BELT COVERS REMOVE CRANK SHAFT SENSOR WIRING.
