You may omit the compressor with a shorter belt of you can find one. just make sure the rest of the pulleys are working especially the water pump and power steering.

SOURCE: 1998 Chrysler Town Country 3.8L Does it Have Timing Belt Or Chain

your engine does have a timing chain, these are very durable, there is no set maintenence interval for them. you can tell how much chain slack you have by gabbing your crankshaft pulley with both hands and rotating it back and forth to feel the chain tightening, it should be a minimul amount of rotation. you should get well over 200k mi. of service without worry. i hope this answers your questions, or at least sets your mind at ease.

SOURCE: how to change serpentine belt

There is a youtube video that shows how to change the serpentine belt/tensioner/idler, but on my 2005, the tensioner looks OEM and doe snot have a squared off end to easily use a wrench to turn.

I think I have a sepentine tool (flat with square 3/8's drive) I can use to turn the tensioner.

Ac belt broke

If your AC belt was dry rotted or worn prior to it's breaking, a new belt should do the trick. If that was not the case, check the compressor pully to see if it spins freely with out the belt on it. If it is hard to spin or does not spin at all then a new or refurbished compressor is recommended.

Smelled rubber burning then the A/C stopped working. No air blowing.

Your description indicates that the belt for the ac burned off and broke possibly due to the ac compressor either locking up or another pully that particular belt rides on locked up.

One of my pullys broke last night. Im trying to find a layout of my pullies so i can figure out which pully broke.

Both Gates and Dayton have good diagrams on their websites that show belt routing, but you'll need to know the engine information for your car. www.gates.com, and then use the parts locator. You need to click on the photo icon next to the serpentine belt listing. Best Regards, SJV

1996 dodge caravan cuts out and dies, then my air went out when the belt pully thing broke. got that fixed but my van is still dieing when the air is on. what could it be.

Have the ac system checked,if the high side pressure is getting too high,it will try and lock up,this would cause the problem, also make sure the condenser cooling fans are coming on when the ac is turned on,if they are not, then a relay,or high side pressure switch is bad,on the high side ac line coming out of the compressor.

Serpentine belt slips off idler pulley

The A/C pully is supposed to spin freely until the AC is activated to run.. The cranshaft pully does not. Replace the tensioner pully. The belt has to fit in between the grooves on the pullys.
