2001 yukon xl, rear axle leaking onto brakes

Needs rear axle seals which requires removal of the rear axles. Shafts must be inspected to make sure the surface the seal rides on does not have wear.

2001 Yukon rear disc brake pads are wearing out fast. Just replaced them 30k miles ago. Indicators are touching. What would cause this? Could it be a porportioning valve?

Sadly, that's about average mileage for GM pads. Alot has to do with weight of your rig. Question? Did you replace or resurface rotors? If not, that can accelerate wear, but 30k is about average. If you want longer life, flip for the ceramic or better grade pads.

Does the 2003 gmc yukon have rear rotors? and do the brakes need to be changed if the rotors need to be machined?

Yes, it has rear Disc Brakes, I would suggest to change the rear pads since they have to remove the rear Brake Calipers to remove the rotors and it wouldn't take much more time or labor to replace the pads at that point. That way when your rear rotors are re-installed and your new brake pads are installed your rear brakes should give you longer service life and better stopping power.

How hard is it to do rear disc brakes on a 2001 Yukon XL 4wd . I am thinking about doing a "pad slap" front and rear. Any issues doing that?

Very easy, just going to need some simple hand tools. Possible a torx 55 bit for the front caliper pins and some sort of c clamp to push pistons back. Be sure to lube your slide up well to keep them from rusting up.

On 2001 gmc yukon rear disc brakes after u loosn the bolts on the caliper do they come all the way out and do u have to remove the bracket that holds the caliper on

It should pull off, you may have to get a big "C" clamp and push the caliper piston back, or sometimes you can pry the piston back with a bar or screwdriver, be careful what you pry on.

I cant get the rear brake caliper off of my 2001 yukon . The bolts holding it on just turn without moving in or out . How do I change the brakes ?

If you will look at the inner part of the caliper that the bolts go into they have a flat side for a wrench to go on. Put a wrench on these flat spots and then remove the bolts. Good Luck

ALWAYS replace pads and/or shoes in pairs .. the fact that one side is so much more worn than the other is a RED flag .. you may have frozen caliper ..
