Question about 2002 Chrysler PT Cruiser

7 Answers

PT Cruer will turn over but wont fire. Have changed the Cranks Shaft sensor, Cam Shaft sensor, TIming belt and Water pump.

I have an 02 PT cruiser, about two months ago I went to go crank it up and it would turn over but wouldn't fire. I should also say that it would occasionally run next hot and lose water and the heater smelled like antifreeze when it was on. I called around to a few mechanics and they said Crankshaft Sensor and Camshaft sensor, so we changed both. Only to find out the timing belt was popped. We changed the timing belt and water pump. It will still turn over but wont fire. We have checked the compression and it is getting great compression. Any ideas?

Sounds to me like your timing is out. But you did change several items that would cause it not to fire. I would check to see if it is getting spark, and make sure that your timing marks are correct. Your belt may have broken when you attempted to start it, and it would have went out of time for certain. You also need to check and see if you have a clearence or non-clearance engine. this refers to the valves and pistons. If it is non-clearance you cold have done some major damage is trying to start it. Reason: your pistons would it the valves and that is not good. I have an 01 cruiser, and my belt broke on the interstate doing 80, I have a clearance engine so mine was o.k. Hope this helps.

When I had to do it, I called Chrystler with the VIN number. They were able to tell me. I am not sure of the code any more, but one of the digits will let you know. I researched this some and yours should be "free wheeling" meaning it is a clearance engine. I would double check with a chrystler mechanic. Hope this helps. If you know for a fact that the timing belt was installed wnd the timing marks were not aligned, that would cause this.

Is it getting spark? Ground out spark plug wire to see if there is spark. If there is not, is there a coil on car?

Try resetting the CPU program because periods with the battery disconnected corrupts the program which has the immobiliser program in it as well. Use a scanner for this job as removing and re fitting the cable only does half a job and probably will not fix the area that is needed.

Testimonial: "can you tell me how to reset the cpu?? we've tried disconnecting the battery a few times, and nothing. This seems like it may be the most helpful thing thus far, as the ODBI code reader is saying no codes but the engine light seems to be flashing a code and the temp and direction guage is stuck at 19 degrees(when that's what the temp was when it went out) and its 90 out now."

have a competent person use a scanner to read the codes and to reset the CPU program. There are a number of different procedures to connect up a scanner and if it is not done correctly there will e no codes read and a false impression is gained of no faults. The engine light is probably flashing a code and a competent person will be able to read if the flashes are long or short and the timing of the flashes as this method is used when there is no data connection point connection or in conjunction with a data connection point.

Recently the same thing happened to me. It ended up being the ignition that was broken. It was going to cost kind of a lot to change it but a friend installed a push button ignition for $50 instead.

Have you checked the iginition system? Check and change the ignition coil, and you may want to check your spark plugs and wires as well.

Posted on May 12, 2014

You checked fuel and spark maybe the immobilizer system won't accept the key

If the belt has snapped it would never start.
when you changed the belt, did you set it up correctly?
even then you would be very lucky not have damaged the valves etc.

My thought is to get a refund from the shop that tried to replace parts in order to secure your problem. The job of the shop is to diagnose the problem, not to replace items that may be the problem. Chrysler Master Techs are not trained to just replace parts, they fix the problem by diagnosing it properly.

You need to see a Chrysler dealership so they can attach a DRBIII and tell you exactly what is at stake.

I hope this helps you. I would be mad as heck.

I would not think the plugs and wires would be the problem because they would all have to fail at the same time to provide the symptom you experienced.

1. Get your money back
2. DRBIII

SOURCE: i have a 2001 pt cruiser replaced the head ,timing

I just copied this from another site. Better check to see if there is power going to the coils first.
The coil pack consists of 2 coils molded together. High tension leads route to each cylinder from the coil. The coil fires two spark plugs every power stroke. One plug is the cylinder under compression, the other cylinder fires on the exhaust stroke. Coil number one fires cylinders 1 and 4. Coil number two fires cylinders 2 and 3. The PCM determines which of the coils to charge and fire at the correct time. The Auto Shutdown (ASD) relay provides battery voltage to the ignition coil. The PCM provides a ground contact (circuit) for energizing the coil. When the PCM breaks the contact, the energy in the coil primary transfers to the secondary causing the spark. The PCM will de-energize the ASD relay if it does not receive the crankshaft position sensor and camshaft position sensor inputs. The OEM ignition coil lists for about $105. Warning - The direct ignition system generates approximately 40,000 volts. Personal injury could result from contact with this system.

timing belt is off by a tooth or two. you probably didn\'t have to replace the coolant sensor; that code sets whenever the sensor is disconnected and the ignition is turned on; and it needs to be reset by disconnecting the battery or with a code reader. anyway, the crank/ cam sensors are out of sync. if you\'ve got the twin cam engine, they are a royal pain to get the belt to lay properly on the two cams.

My 2003 PT Cruiser runs rough I replace the cam sensor but no better any ideas

not many other reasons why it would run rough if serviced
think its a 2.4 EFI motor timing belt
how many kms has this one done

wont be the crank angle sensor or ecu because its running
any engine light on
if it is on.... there will be fault codes stored to read
check over
maybe 02 sensors
fuel filter change or fuel pump problem
coil packs and plugs
u can clean the throttle body
u can check the air filter

Shut off on the interstate and wont crank up. we changed the cam sensor the crankshaft sensor and the battery. it turns over but wont crank.

Well, During this time when you replaced the cam sensor and stuff did you check to see if the timing belt was still intact? Do a compression check to see if you've lost compression on any cylinders. If the timing belt broke this will be the case. Chrysler typically has a plastic cover that goes over the cam pulley end of the timing belt that can be removed, it also has a check hole, to check the timing belt as well.
