Is my 97 corrolla 1.8liter an interference engine. The timing belt jumpep and I need to know if the valves will be bent

most modern engines are interference designed. keeps the engine profile smaller for fitment in the engine bay. I have successfully straightened valves on a 2.7 V6 honda engine that snapped the cambelt. Just revved the heck out of it once the new belt was on. All ok afterwards. Did you shut down as soon as the belt jumped the cog ?

What models have non interference engines

See the catalog from Gates at the link. Models listed with a star have interference engines. Presumably, if there is no star, it is a non-interference engine. http://www.gates.com/~/media/files/gates/automotive/catalogs/automotive/timingbeltreplacementguide.pdf?la=en

New timing belt on 98 camry with no compression???? HELP

You've either got the valve timing wrong .. or..

It may be that the pistons have hit the valves because of incorrect timing. Damaged valves will result in no compression.. This will happen on an interference engine - valves hit pistons. I don't think your car is an interference fit engine, so it may be -hopefuly - a case of incorrect timing.

The link below lists all interference engines:

My timing chain has snapped

I assume it's your timing belt, not a chain, which rarely, if ever snap. Depending on the make of the car and the engine you may, or may not, have serious engine damage.. DO NOT ATTEMPT to start the car, have it towed to your shop of choice. If there is no engine damage a timing belt replacement generally will run you 2 or 3 hundred bucks...if you did serious engine damage you may have to decide if the car if worth the money to have it repaired. What you need to know is whether your car has an "interference" or "non-interference" type engine.. In an interference type engine if the timing belt breaks the valves will "interfere" with the pistons as they travel up if the timing belt breaks, which results in generally catastrophic engine failure.. non-interference engines generally suffer little or no engine damage with a broken timing belt.. I broke a timing belt on my 1990 Toyota Supra going 70mph, but it was a non-interference engine and after having the belt replaced it was fine.. here is a good list someone put together on what type of engine is in your car.. you should find the engine type either marked on the engine or on a label under the hood, or the owners manual.. good luck. http://yourcarangel.com/2014/07/interference-engines-complete-list/

I have an 2008 suzuki forenza and I would like to know if its has and interference engine in it

one of the most hard questions of all, given the cars history.
even the WIKI, has trouble identifying it,
no engine stated or country.? (open hood ,look up see that sticker, then engine is stated clearly there, in usa, if in fact in ,USA.
they have many, the car is a Daewoo

read the wiki
see this
1.4 L E-TEC I4 (petrol) a Daewoo variant. 1.4L
1.6 L E-TEC I4 (petrol) same Bupyeong engine 1.6L
1.8 L Family II I4 (petrol) made by HOLDEN?
2.0 L Family II I4 (petrol)
2.0 L RA 420 I4 (diesel) the wiki calls out for the 2.0Gas
X20SED D-TEC 16 Valve DOHC MPFi was built by Holden and used in the Daewoo Nubira.
but fails to note, its on a frenza.
each engine has a proper maker , and exact model number
if you dont know whats there, underhood, then no man can answer.

Water pump barring went out on my 1997 rav4. I heard it knocked the pistons into the values? Is that possible?

The water pump is driven by the cam belt and on some vehicles with an interference engine if the water pump failed and cause the cam belt to break then it could cause internal engine damage. Your 1997 Rav4 water pump is driven by the cam belt but is not an interference engine. So, not to worry as no damage has been done. Just replace the water pump and cam belt and all should be well.

I had the same thing happen, No, I was told this is not one of the engines that allows the piston to contact the valves. I replaced the timing belt 2 years ago and had no valve problems.

1997 Nissan Pathfinder Timing Belt snapped, how do I know if this has caused engine damage?

You will have to take off the heads and check the valves. Your valves might be bent. But do not try to crank the engine again.
