About the only thing i can think of that will do this while trying to start is that starter remains engauged after engine starts , the starter motor draws a lot of power ,the most of any item in your truck. and if it remains running after start the alternator/voltage reg supplys it's power instead of the battery , and one other thing your model year (and a few past that) has a common problem with a little thing called a bendix inside the starter sticking due to carbon build up and yep the symptom of this is the starter runs on after you let the key go but there can be other causes of this happening so all reasons need to be looked at

check the running voltage to the coil
if it is greater tan the voltage on the case , check for a problem resistor or resistor wire to the coil in the run position

I replaced an oil dipstick on a 1979 Ford F150. The tube accidentally touched one of the terminials on the alternator and shorted out. Smoke started coming from the stater solenoid. Replaced the solenoid...

Please check at the fuse box. Look for the Starter Fuse. Replace it with the same specification. Then test it. And also please try also checking the voltage of the battery installed in your car.

The F100 ended in 1983, so there is some confusion on your 1987 Ford F100. The F150 started in 1983 and was available in 1987, but not the F100. You have this listed under the 1981 Ford F100 category.
The 300 CID = 4.9L In-Line (Straight) 6-Cylinder.
In order to best answer your question I have included both the 1981 F100 4.9L and 1987 F150 4.9L below. The only difference is with the Distributor Cap Configuration and Connections.

I have replaced the starter and selenoid in my 1989 F-250 3 times in the past 4 months. Why do they keep going?

Go have your voltage regulator checked at autozone. Sounds like it is bad. It is putting out too much voltage and frying everything.

Clicking sound when trying to start

the clicking sound may be the sound of a bad starter or the battery doesnt have enough juice to start the truck try giving a jump start first if that does not work try hitting the starter with a hammer a few times to see if it starts if it does this is a starter problem.if no start check and see if there is power athe possitive wire when trying to start it. because this is an older truck you can check for powere at the solenoid on the fender

we are a tech help site no links to parts, sorry, have you tried ebay, there are allot of vintage parts there like this column, have bought lots of parts for cars back to the 1940's on ebay.
