It should be an I-6 (inline six) Do you have a check engine light on? If your computer coolant sensor goes bad it can think it's -40 degrees below F, and it will pump in more fuel. Just an idea, hope it helps.

4.0 is an L 6 . Not having the luxury of being there and doing the necessary testing myself, you will need to do that. You will need to get either a chilton or haynes basic manual and a decent digital volt/ohmeter. things I'd immediately check are the map sensor, manifold temperature sensor and finally, remove and visually inspect the fuel injectors (can test good electrically but be fouled on ends, causing a poor spray pattern). These are suggestions only...I would not replace any of these without testing.
Any questions about specific items, just ask!!
Good luck

What should the idle speed be set at on a 1989 jeep wrangler 4.2 liter straight 6 cyl. It has a 2bbl carb. It idles at 1000 rpm right now but seems fast or is that about right?

Most carb. engines should idle between 725 and 750 R.P.M., lower the idle and be sure to check the timing. You should have an emissions label under the hood to explain the idle and timing.

1992 jeep wrangler with faulty acceleration. It

It is possibly the O2 sensor. I had some issues with early 90's 4.0 liters where the O2 sensor would stick rich under heavy acceleration and would cause it to lean out and bog down. It felt like a rochester four barrel flat spot on an old chevy. I hope this helps.

2000 jeep wrangler are sythetic lubes used in axils and trans

Hello grega1967, your Jeep Wrangler came from the factory with gear oil in the axles and manual transmission, but the transfer case uses transmission fluid. It is a NP231 and your axles are Dana 30 in the front and Dana 35 in the rear. They should have a 4.10 gear ratio due to you having a 2.5 liter 4 cylinder.

I hope this helps,

1998 Jeep Wrangler 2.5 liter motor timing specs?

you could have vacumm problems making it seem like the timing is off, but the other guys are right on the timing!!!! it could be throw-body problems, like crack manifold problems. This year has thhis type of problem sometime. Try spraying WD-40 around the vacuum hoses, & manifold to see if the motor changes rpm????
