Question about 2000 Jeep Wrangler
I have a 2000 Jeep Wrongler 4.0L with manual trans. The check engine light comes on and the engine 'lurches'. I think it is cutting out. The shop said I need to replace the computer and the clock spring in the steerung column. They told me these Jeeps have a known problem with rubbing the wire harness and shorting the wires.
If I purchase an ECM on-line and make sure the wire harness is OK, is it just as simple as plugging the new ECM in or does it need to be reprogramed (at the dealer)?
Also, if it IS a short in the harness, why would I need to change the ECM?
Well you wont need to change the ecm if its not burt yet.
try correcting the short first before you do burn out the comp.
if this is the model with the in line coil pack you will need to make sure the heater hoses are not drooping down on the pack.use wire straps to raise the heater hoses just off the pack.you may want to remove the pack and put some dielectric lube on the spark plug boots so it goes down all the way on the spark plug.when the plug miss fires and causes the engine to stumble the comp raises the idle to compesate.then the plug fires again and the idle surges.
hope this helps

The ecm rarely goes bad, if it doesnt do anything, such as start crank or fire than I would replace the ecm. I would lean toward the ignition circuitry and while the check engine light is showing its *** you can also turn the key on and off three times and on the last time it should read an error code on the odometer , call your local parts store and find out what areas to look at as far as mafuncioning
