SOURCE: rear brakes on 1998 mercury sable

If it's anything like my old 93 Sable, you will have to disconnect the parking brake cable from the caliper before you can retract the piston. You should be able to do this with rudimentary tools - screwdriver, pliers. Also, the pistons on those type of calipers will NOT compress back into the cylinder. You will need to get a piston-retracting tool from your car parts store. These types of pistons need to be screwed back in by getting this tool and using a ratchet to press & turn at the same time. Have a swear jar and a few bandaids handy.

SOURCE: rear brakes on 1998 mercury sable

I've done it and hated every minute of it.

Get a quality brake piston rotator tool. The Autozone 5 sided cube is no good.

you will have to spin the piston back about 4-5 turns until it fully retracts.

The expanding/ 500lb pressure clamps do no good b/c the brake is like a hydraulic screw. You can't compress this type of brake.
Starting the rotation of the piston back will require two people

1 to hold the tool and ratchet on the piston, the other to turn the ratchet.

SOURCE: How do I adjust the parking brake cable on a 1991

If the car has a center console between the seats, and the e-brake lever is there, remove the console there should be a bolt to tighten or loosen. Loosen it with the lever DOWN, pull the cable as tight as it will go with your hand and a pair of pliers. Holding the cable in place tighten the bolt or nut that secures the cable. If this doesn't fix it, have your rear brakes inspected and/or adjusted.

SOURCE: 97' mercury sable the gear shifter will not shift

Sounds like the safety switch that allows it to shift out of park with brake pedal applied is faulty.

Mercury sable gear shiftier jammed in park

Found this for a '93
Check that the brake lights work. The neutral park solenoid needs to see an input from the brake light switch before it allows the transmission to be taken out of park. If the brake lights don't work check the switch and fuses. If not the solenoid that allows the shift linkage out of park may have failed. Nearly every car has a mechanical override to allow the transmission to be shifted out of Park.

And this for a 2002
More than likely the BOO (brake on/off) switch located on the brake pedal, or it's connector is the problem. Check to see if the brake lights are working. If not, you can disconnect the BOO switch and jump the wires together. If the brake lights come on then, it should shift out of park.

So your's should be the same.

2001 MERCURY SABLE -STUCK IN PARK

You have to have power to your brake switch for your shifter interlock to work. I would check the brake fuse and make sure you are getting power to the brake switch located on the pedal assembly under the steering column.

1996 mercury sable starts after being charged but next day is dead again

there is a Safety Recall Notice
01S08Grease used on the adjustable pedal assembly may enter the brake lamp switch and contaminate the contacts. This may cause one or more of the following symptoms to occur:
-Brake lights stay illuminated or are inoperative.
-Shift Interlock disabled (will be able to shift out of "Park" position without depressing the brakes.
-Speed Control will not activate.
-Cannot shift the vehicle out of "Park."
-ABS Warning light illuminates on vehicles with ABS
-Battery Discharged."

My 1998 mercury sable won't come out of park but

That happen to me, and A guy helped me. The problem maybe down by the brake pedal, but above the brakes you may have pulled the wires a loose with your feet, or something and the wires need to be put back together maybe with black electrical tape. Definitley have to go down to the floor, and look under where the brake pedal is.

It somtimes won't go into Park -therefore it won't start. It "looks" like it is in park but it is not.

Look under the the hood, on top of transmission where the shifter cable hooks on, has a nut loosen it and try adjusting the cable.
