4 times in the past year, my childrens' 2008 chevy cobalt will not start.
the key goes into the ignition, but the steering wheel will not move, and the ignition will not 'turn over' the starter.
AND....I have just been told it will take 1 month to get parts replaced...
NO WONDER GM IS IN TROUBLE.

Try jumping/boosting the vehicle, all of the above will still work with a weak/low battery but the starting system takes a lot of amperage to turn over the engine. If you only left the keys in the car and no lights on or anything running why would it not start if it was starting correctly before??? Whats happened since the car was last started?
if nothing happens when you turn the key the problem is most likely the ignition switch and housing(had mine replaced 3 times already. firstr time at 12,000 miles) what you can try is hit key with rubber mallet while trying to turn but this would only be to get it started so you can drive to a chevy dealer(dont waste your time at any old repair shop for this). Hope this helps.
There is a TSB on this issues if your having ignition lock issues.

now what it sounds like is the key has a sensor built in it the keys cost around 60.00$ but this is most likely what is wrong. the sensor is a security feature with the car if the light glows while trying to turn the car then this your problem :)
try everything at once if you can wiggle gear shift step on brake and turn wheels on the steering wheel if possable wiggle it too.. and then try to get the key out while doing this .. which you might have already done .. not sure. holler if you need help Jerry
