2000 Honda 1.6 showing P1336 code, what is the location of this code?

Recently had timing belt, water pump, pulley, seals and belts replaced three months ago. Car has run good and there appears to be no change in performance, even after the engine light came on.

The crankshaft has a speed fluctuation sensor that detects minute variations at the crankshaft(which means it uses the crankshaft speed to determine if there are any misses). But the code refers to an interruption, so look for any loose wiring around the crank sensor, or opens or shorts in the wiring. IF the car runs fine, then your looking at a faulty CSF(crank speed fluctuation) sensor or the associated wiring.

Only two things I have seen cause this code, the first is the crank sensor harness not routed correctly after a timing belt job or alt. replacement and the alt. belt rubs it or the timing belt has jumped a tooth or is not lined up correctly.

Hello,my 2000 odyssey leaks oil.guy said its front oil seal but im gonna need time belt,water pump,vtec valve and oil pan gasket.Do i really need all that just to change front seal? $400 for labor?


A leaking front seal will allow oil to get into the area where the timing belt is located. This will cause oil to get on the belt and can cause damage. Since the timing cover must be removed to access the front seal, it is recommended to replace the belt while you are in there. Also, the water pump is driven off the timing belt. Replacement of the water pump is always recommended when replacing the timing belt for two reasons. First, it is easily replaced at this time and it is good preventive maintenance. Secondly, the water pump bearing is under tension from the timing belt and develops a wear pattern. Replacement of the belt without replacing the pump will cause the new belt to wear the bearing in a different pattern, often causing leaking in a very short time after the replacement. This would then result in having to repeat all the labor again to replace the pump. It is easy to see that for $400.00 labor, you don't want to do that again in only 2-3 months. as far as the VTEC valve is concerned, I don't see a relationship to the oil leak. It could just be something else the mechanic found during the inspection. I can find nothing in the remove/replace procedures that requires replacement of the oil pan gasket. Again, maybe something additional that is needed from visual inspection, but not needed for the front seal.

If you sit on a driver's seat, the timing belt and the water pump is located on your left most side on the engine under the hood, behind the main pulley. The main pulley accommodates the alternator belt, ac belt and power steering belt, if any.
The water pump and timing belt are both enclosed in the timing belt case.

4cyl 2000 honda accord engine stalls while idling, recently died and will only start for short periods... possible problems/solutions?


check for spark and fuel after it dies.

If there is spark but no fuel, then the fuel pump may be bad or a clogged fuel filter.

If there is fuel but not spark, then the ignition control module or the ignition coil could be bad.

Also, check that the timing belt is timing the engine correctly.

To Remove:



  1. Record anti-theft code for radio.
  2. Disconnect battery negative cable then positive cable.

  3. Turn crankshaft pulley until TDC is achieved.
  4. Raise and safely support vehicle.
  5. Remove front tire assembly.
  6. Remove splash shield.
  7. Remove power steering belt.
  8. Remove alternator and alternator bracket.
  9. Safely support engine under oil pan.

  10. Remove stop, detach ground cable and remove upper bracket.
  11. Remove cylinder head cover.
  12. Remove upper cover.
  13. Remove dipstick and tube assembly.
  14. Remove crankshaft pulley.
  15. Remove adjusting nut rubber seal and remove lower cover.

  16. Loosen adjusting nut 1 turn.
  17. Push up on balancer belt tensioner to relieve belt tension.
  18. Push down on timing belt tensioner to relieve belt tension.
  19. Tighten adjusting nut 1 turn.
  20. Remove balancer belt and timing belt.


To Install:


NOTE: Clean balancer belt drive pulley, timing belt pulleys and
upper/lower timing cover prior to belt installation.

  1. Set timing belt drive pulley to TDC by aligning dimple on pulley with dimple
    on oil pump.

  2. Set camshaft pulley to TDC so that "UP" mark is at top and grooves align
    with top of cylinder head.

  3. Starting with driver pulley, install timing belt in a counterclockwise
    sequence.
  4. Loosen and ten retighten adjusting nut.
  5. Install balancer belt drive pulley.
    NOTE: Inspect rubber seal on lower cover and replace as necessary.

  6. Install lower cover.
  7. Install crankshaft pulley and bolt.
  8. Rotate crankshaft pulley counterclockwise several times to seat belt.
  9. Loosen adjusting nut 1 turn.
  10. Rotate crankshaft counterclockwise 3 teeth on camshaft pulley.
  11. Tighten adjusting nut to 33 ft lb (44 Nm).

  12. Turn crankshaft pulley until TDC is achieved.

  13. Ensure that camshaft pulley "UP" mark is at top and grooves align with top
    of cylinder head.
  14. Remove crankshaft pulley and lower cover.
  15. Rotate crankshaft to TDC again and lock timing belt adjuster arm with a 6 mm
    timing cover bolt.
  16. Loosen adjuster nut 1 turn and ensure that belt tensioner freely moves.
  17. Push tensioner up and tighten adjusting nut.

  18. Remove bolt and washer from maintenance hole.
  19. Using a 6 X 100 mm bolt, scribe a mark 2.9 in (74 mm) from end.
  20. Insert bolt into maintenance hole and hole in balancer shaft.
  21. Install bolt up to scribed line.

  22. Align groove on balancer shaft with pointer on oil pump housing.
  23. Install balancer belt and loosen adjusting nut 1 turn to tension.
  24. Retighten bolt.

  25. Remove bolt from maintenance hole and install bolt and washer. Tighten to
    22 ft lb (29 Nm).
  26. Reinstall crankshaft pulley.
  27. Loosen adjusting nut 1 turn.
  28. Rotate crankshaft pulley counterclockwise 1 turn and tighten adjusting nut.
  29. Remove bolt from timing belt adjuster arm.
    NOTE: Inspect rubber seal on lower cover and replace as necessary.

  30. Remove crankshaft pulley.
  31. Install lower cover.
  32. Install seal at adjusting nut.
    NOTE: Crankshaft pulley, bolt and washer must be cleaned prior to
    installation.

  33. Lubricate crankshaft pulley bolt between head and washer and bolt threads
    with clean engine oil.

    CAUTION
    Do not use impact wrench to perform
    following step.

  34. Install crankshaft pulley and tighten bolt using special tools to 181 ft
    lb (245 Nm)
    .
  35. Install dipstick/tube assembly.
  36. Install upper cover. Tighten bolts to 9 ft lb (12 Nm).
  37. Install cylinder head cover.
  38. Install alternator bracket and alternator.
  39. Install power steering pump belt and alternator belt.

  41. Install stop.
  42. Install battery and enter radio anti-theft code.

My bf can not get the corner bolt off to get to my timing belt


This is not an easy task and you will find it takes about 6-8 hours if you have all the needed parts ready to install if you need them. Don't expect to just go to the local parts place and obtain some of these parts. There are several dealer only parts.

Before you start this job:
1. Inspect the upper and lower torque struts that hold the motor on the passenger side. Order them ahead of time if you see they are damaged. Make sure the local parts store has them in stock if you are not sure of their integrity. You can tell if they are bad when you remove them; they just fall apart or you can see the split neoprene.
2. Inspect your accessory belts and the serpentine tensioner pulley prior to beginning the work. Order the belts (If you have over 75,000 miles on the vehicle, you will need the new accessory belts.) or know where you can purchase them locally.
3. Make sure you can get a new timing belt tensioner unit locally at your Mopar Dealer. If you have a mechanical timing belt tensioner, you are warned by a Dodge technical bulletin to replace it with a hydraulic unit.
4. Order a water pump and replace it while replacing the timing belt.
5. Of course, purchase a timing belt, lol...


First, it was necessary to remove the passenger side tire and the splash guard behind the tire in the wheel well. The next items to remove were the accessories belts (ac, alternator, etc.) which included the serpentine belt. The crankshaft damper had to be removed with a three-arm puller tool and a small insert that protects the crankshaft threads. Remove the power steering pump by just setting it off to the side after removing the bolts. You don't have to undo the hoses; just lay it over to the side.

Using a floor jack, you hold the engine in place while you remove the lower torque arms. Inspect the upper and lower torque arms carefully. I would at least inspect these torque arms carefully for broken neoprene prior to beginning the timing belt change.


Next, you must remove the serpentine tensioner plate which has three bolts. This was a totally unexpected cost for my timing belt replacement when I tried to purchase only the plastic tensioner pulley and was informed that the item was not a replacement part; you had to go to Dodge and purchase an entire plate (with a redesigned "hydraulic" tensioner for the serpentine belt tensioner). go to a local salvage yard and obtained a fairly new tensioner pulley for about $5.00; the old plastic pulley will be completely worn away. A new serpentine tensioner plate with the integral tensioner is $429 at Dodge.


You can now remove the front timing cover. Make sure to align the camshaft and crankshaft timing marks before removing the timing belt. The camshaft pulley has a mark that needs to align with the mark on the head above the pulley. The crankshaft sprocket should line up at the same time with its mark at the top of the oil pump assembly. If you accidentally move the camshaft in some manner, after you remove the timing belt, you can damage the pistons or valves.

Next, to loosen the old timing belt, you need to look at the tensioner. Insert an 8 mm Allen wrench into the hexagon opening located on the front of the belt tensioner pulley. Rotate the pulley counterclockwise until it contacts the stop. While holding tensioner pulley against stop, insert a 1/8" or 3 mm diameter pin or Allen wrench through the hole located to the left of the hex opening. While pushing pin into hole, allow the tensioner pulley to rotate back. Almost immediately, the pin should engage the locking hole to prevent further movement of the pulley. I was totally surprised by what happened when I tried to purchase a new timing belt tensioner pulley as my pulley was worn quite badly. I received the wrong part to replace the tensioner pulley three times at three different parts stores. It took about an hour to discover that there was a problem with the old "mechanical" timing belt tensioners. It is not just recommended that you change the tensioner; you must replace the timing belt tensioner plate and all if you have the older mechanical tensioner. This is a technical bulletin from Mopar that says there have been several "explosions" of the mechanical units with engine replacements needed; the tensioner actually blew a hole in the engine block. Of course, this is not a "free replacement" due to a manufacturing problem; you must purchase this item. Some of the latter models of the 2000 Neon have had the hydraulic units installed and all you need to purchase is the tensioner pulley which costs about $30. You can tell if you have the mechanical one when you actually get into and remove the timing belt; the mechanical unit has four pronounced legs, while the hydraulic unit is more of a plate (even though the holes align for both units). You must replace the back timing belt cover with a new tensioner installation (and it comes with the kit). In the earlier neon model required a complete plate, hydraulic unit and tensioner pulley replacement. And, of course, it a dealer item only with a cost of $469.

Before you begin your job of timing belt replacement, find out if you own an earlier 2000 and also locate a dealer with the unit in stock. You honestly should install the hydraulic unit as the technical bulletin explains the damage from an "explosion".


While you are in there, you should replace the water pump. If you read all the bulletins and people's posts about this item going bad just after they finished the timing belt, you really should just purchase the water pump and make sure it has the seal in the kit (some did not include the water pump seal.). The water pump was only $40. If you have to replace it, you see all the trouble you must go through again to get it out of the timing belt area. The water pump is driven by the timing belt.
The oil pump is also driven by the timing belt; however, there are not many failures of the oil pumps.

Now you may start to put the timing belt into place. If you have gotten the timing just a tiny bit off, you can follow the procedure as below. It is hard to explain in words only without pictures; however, I will try to do so.


Set crankshaft sprocket to TDC by aligning the sprocket with the arrow on the oil pump housing, then back off to 3 notches before TDC, that is clockwise three teeth.

Use a large wrench and the crankshaft nut to carefully adjust the timing. This is to allow for belt installation later.


Set camshaft to TDC by aligning mark on sprocket with the arrow on the rear of timing belt cover. Move crankshaft to 1/2 mark before TDC for belt installation.


Install timing belt.
Starting at the crankshaft, go around the water pump sprocket and then around the camshaft sprocket.
Move crankshaft sprocket to TDC to take up belt slack.
Remove the pin or 1/8" or 3 mm Allen wrench from belt tensioner.
Rotate crankshaft 2 revolutions and check the alignment of the timing marks.


Install front timing belt cover. Install engine mount bracket. Install right engine mount to engine mount bracket through bolt. Remove jack from under engine. Install upper torque strut. Install power steering pump assembly. Raise vehicle and install lower torque strut. Install crankshaft damper using M12-1.75 x 150 mm bolt, washer, thrust bearing and nut from Special Tool 6792. Install crankshaft damper bolt and tighten to 142 Nm (100 ft. lbs.). Install accessory drive belts. Install right inner splash shield.
Lower vehicle and perform camshaft and crankshaft timing relearn procedure as follows: Connect the DRB scan tool to the data link (diagnostic) connector. This connector is located in the passenger compartment; at the lower edge of instrument panel; near the steering column. Turn the ignition switch on and access the "miscellaneous" screen. Select "re-learn cam/crank" option and follow directions on DRB screen.
It is not a fun job unless you enjoy some very hard work and have a few specialized tools. The scan tool was purchased at Sears (I hope I can say a specific name. You can purchase the scan tool at a parts store or off the web as well.). The special tool is a three-arm puller. The other special tool is to protect the crankshaft threads. What else needs to be changed when doing a timing belt on a 1999 honda accord? and about how much should it cost?


Technically, nothing else needs to be changed when replacing a timing belt, however it is recommended or suggested to replace the timing belt tensioner and water pump while doing the belt. These items are only accessable when doing a timing belt. The cost should be under $100.00

Got a 2000 millenia s it knocks sounds like its


sounds like the water pump bearing is worn out and has detroyed the water pump shaft seal.
coolant is leaking thru the seal area ,due to the bearing worn out --hence throwing the water pump pulley out of alignment.
The water pump pulley runs of the timing belt.---hence the knocking --either from the pulley or belt chaffing against the timing cover or even throwing the engine timing a few degrees off.
Need to replace water pump and timeing belt and anything else that may be damaged.
That's why, when ever you do a timing belt always do the water pump too.

I have antifreeze leak coming out of the top pulley area on left passenger side closest to grill is this where my water pump is located and the radiator hose also connects to that same pulley area


You are correct! This is your water pump. Unfortunately it sounds like your water pumps water seal and bearing are going bad.

If you are going to have repairs done also check to see if its time to replace your timing belt. Most cars that have timing belts have scheduled replacement intervals of 90000 to 120000 miles depending on the vehicle.

I am just saying this because the timing belt sits behind the water pump and while the mechanic already has the pump off and all the belts removed its a good time to combine the timing belt job and save on all the additional labor. Plus, when your timing belt breaks....you can have all kinds of serious engine damage take place...not to mention being stranded somewhere.
