Don't. but if you must, you will need a programmer or tuner, you can get them from your local auto parts store $$$

The service is completely free and covers almost anything you can think of (from cars to computers, handyman, and even drones).

I think you got hold of a batch of stale gasoline, have seen it many times. This happens this time of year because they are using up all the winter blend gas so they can switch to the summer blend..

Transmission stuck in 1st gear on a 87 camaro iroc-z

If the moudulator (vacuum controlled) is bad it will stay in low,Not sure what tranny, but if it has a vacuum line going to it ,start there,if you pull the vac. line off and fluid drips out ,it's bad.
If a 700r 4 speed ,Pull the cover for the governor (should have a wire clip over it,like a master cyl clip ,kinda) It's just pressed into the housing. A small amount of fluid will leak out. Just grab the governor by the end and pull it out ,The gear on the end is plactic,if it's "applecored" the governor can't work. I've replaced mine a few times.
Oh yea ,check the kickdown cable first, make sure ,if you pull on it ,you can feel the spring pressure aginst it as you get to the end.

You have a governor problem and possibly a vacuum modulator bad as well. Remove governor cover and remove governor valve to check for sticking valve or weights, clean and replace, or replace with new, Remove Vacuum modulator and preform vacuum test, if it does not hold a vacuum then replace with new. Use a transmission flush and treatment to remove any moisture and or moisture residue or rust that may have formed inside trans from sitting idle for two years...
